New Crawlmaster Sport 540 and 550 motors!

1 Attachment(s)
Looking for a motor that doesn't break the bank, but doesnt skimp on quality and smoothness either? I made the new Crawlmaster Sport motors just for you! Smooth starting 5 slot just like our other 3 models of Crawlmaster , but built into a sealed can! Combined with higher quality magnets than your typical sealed can, specific brush compound, and a ball bearing on the output, these motors deliver an incredible value, longevity, and driving feel for the price!

Find them at holmeshobbies.com, or at your favorite online retailer or local hobby shop. We dont require minimum orders for brick and mortar shops, so if your LHS doesnt carry our products it is easy to become a dealer and offer industry leading motors! I've been crawling for 17 years and put the experience into all 20+ types of crawling motor we make!

They look good. I would have tried one in my Capra if these were released a few days prior.

Is the 12t close to a 35t? Can't decide what to get for a stock TF2 with the 2-speed. Any suggestions?

The 12t 550 Crawlmaster is equivalent in speed to a 35t 540 3-slot brushed motor (both listed equivalent to 1500kv at the holmes hobbies site).

Re: New Crawlmaster Sport 540 and 550 motors!

The 12t is a little faster, about 1700kv. I'll be sure the chart is correct. I have equivalent kv values on the product pages too.

Re: New Crawlmaster Sport 540 and 550 motors!

I received a 12t Crawlmaster Sport 550 today and threw it in my neighbors Wraith. It is noticeably smoother than his 35t sealed can 540, or the 21t and 27t 550 Trailmaster Sports I have in other cars, all running 3s from Hobbywing WP1080's. With no changes in ESC programming, it does seem less "punchy" which isn't bothersome, but the reduction in drag brake power was more significant than I anticipated. There was no discernible difference in speed from the 35t 3 slot 540 to the 12t 5 slot 550.

Overall I like it and feel like the low speed improvement was worth more than the $20 I paid for the motor. I am gonna have to figure out a way to get more drag brake though. I'm hoping there's still something to be gained in the ESC (he did say he'd been messing with the programmer) otherwise I guess even lower gearing/ underdriving the rear will be the next step.

How do you feel about running 4s on the 12t 550? I only ask because I was thinking if I can gear the car down 25% or more it should make the drag brake hold better (right?) and I could gain the lost top-end back by running 4s (obviously with a different ESC.)

Like John says, "Volt up, gear down!"
I believe the motor is supposed to be good to at least 4s.

Re: New Crawlmaster Sport 540 and 550 motors!

Oh I get that, I run 65:1 with an 1800kv Revolver on 4s (switched from a Micro X to a standard Mamba X tonight, just for that reason) and it's just right to me. I also had a couple other brand cheap 16t 540 5 slots that I ran on 4s, but I sold the car before really feeling out how well they'd get along with the higher voltage. I don't expect them to spontaneously combust or anything (the Trailmaster Sport 27t 550 didn't seem to mind 4s, but the tall geared Titan 12t lit on fire with the quickness!) just curious what JRH's opinion was there.

JohnRobHolmes 09-29-2019 06:19 AM

Re: New Crawlmaster Sport 540 and 550 motors!

Gearing down and using 4s wont be a problem. The reduction in drag and torque is the tradeoff to gain smoothness with any motor. Thanks for the review!

I asked the support earlier this week.

This is the answer:
"Thank you for reaching out. I do not currently have a release ETA as they do not show it available for us to order yet. I do apologize. If you need anything else let us know! have a great day! "

I am also waiting impatiently ;-)

I sent them an email to alert them to the new products. Not sure if they've ordered. If customers would email they will act quicker

FYI, RPP has them in stock. I ordered a 15t 550 earlier in the week and it arrived yesterday.

Hi John, I want to order one of these soon for an SCX10-II raw builder’s kit.

I was looking at the chart on your site and see that the Crawlmaster Sport 540 16T is compatible with the stock gearing on the SCX10-II kit and RTR.

Would a 550 12T also work without changing the gearing? The KV is a bit higher, but not much. Thanks for your help.

It will be slightly fast, but the extra torque of the 550 should make it just fine IMO.

Thanks for the reply. Would it still be okay with a 3s lipo? I’ve never run lipo before, thought about doing that with this build. And if I wanted to gear down, is that just a matter of installing a smaller pinion gear on the motor?

Edit: or maybe 3s is overkill, I’m just looking for smooth, low speed performance, don’t care as much about speed.

Totally fine on 3s

New Crawlmaster Sport 540 and 550 motors!

What is the right 540 can to fit the capra? I have a Castle sidewinder 4 ESC but I don’t want to spend too much money on the motor since I read these new crawlmaater sport is more than enough.
I have a revolver and an yellow jacket which I use in my Toyzuki because of the fitting, and I really hate how they rumble at low speed. Any advice?

I'd think the 16t 540 Crawlmaster Sport would be a good fit. It's about a 1500kv equivalent.
If you need more speed than that, I'm sure the 13t is still a great choice.

Re: New Crawlmaster Sport 540 and 550 motors!

Just ordered a 540 16t. Never used a brushed motor before so hoping this gives me good torque with some wheel speed on my C2 build! Going to start it off on a HW 10BL60 WP which i have lying around here and if its not up to par, will get a 1080.

EDIT: well upon researching this ESC, it seems it can't switch between brushed and brushless. Looks like I will be getting 1080!

I just got the 20t, maybe I can get a little more speed with a higher teeth pinion, what do you recommend?

Yeah I'm sure it would be ok, just don't go too high too fast.

Hey John. I'm going to pick up one of the new 12T 550 Crawl Master motors for my trx4 sport. I'm going to order the motor from my LHS with the wire leads. What size bullet connectors do you use on your wires? Thanks

Re: New Crawlmaster Sport 540 and 550 motors!

Motors finally arrived and I replaced the 27t 540 trailmaster sport with the 13t 540 crawlmaster sport. I did not change anything else and ran it with the old and new motor on my little test track.
The difference is huge. I expected a difference of course, but it is much bigger then I thought.
The control and smoothness in combination with the 1080 esc is brilliant, especially for such a price tag.
Looking forward to compare the 21t 550 with the 12t 550.

The little HH stickers are cool :)
