| Hobbywing 1080 and 3S LIHV experience
I was looking for a smaller, lighter 3S battery for my old school shafty comp crawler and found some 3S LIHV batteries (Turnigy Bolt) that fit the bill. In addition to giving a higher maximum voltage compared to 3S Lipo (13.05 vs 12.6 volts), the batteries were also lighter weight and smaller. I am running a Hobbywing 1080 with a HH Crawlmaster expert 13t 540 motor. The main criticism I have seen for LIHV packs is that many find they fail prematurely (puff) compared to lipos. I saw at least one test on youtube that suggested this is more of an issue with high amp draw use and that at lower amp draws they did fine. Since my setup is a relatively low amp draw setup, I figured I would give them a try. While the batteries were in route I read an old post that suggested 3S LIHV batteries do not work with the Hobbywing 1080 due to the over voltage protection. Today I charged one up to maximum voltage and thankfully did not run into any issues with my first pack. The LIHV did seem to give a little more punch to the crawler which was nice. It was also noticeably lighter and thinner than my old packs which should help with lowering the COG slightly. I will see how they hold up over time. I will update this thread if I also run into issues with premature failure. |

I'd be interested to hear if you ran into any problems. I'm glad to hear your first run was trouble free.

Maybe it's been addressed on newer versions of the 1080. Or maybe we misdiagnosed the problem. The guy who's rig didn't run till the packs were drained to 4.2 a cell was constantly reporting grimlins. __________________________ Handy gearing spreadsheet |

I run LIHV shorties with my HW 1080, and it takes them just fine.

Same here. I've been running 3S LiHV with 1080 for months and no problem at all.

Nice to hear there is some experience with these in brushed crawlers. Any premature battery failures?
