Hobbywing 1080 gets hot

I have pretty decent built trx4. I have a hobbywing 1080 installed and it gets super hot to point thermal switch kills it. My electronics consist of hobby wing 1080 holmes hobby torque expert 540 size 27 turn and a savox sg1210 servo. My gearing consist of over drive in front 15 tooth pinion and 39.tooth spur. I have brass up front nothing in rear and pitbull rockbeasts 4.45 size on chanquish 1.9 beadlocks. I'm thinking my esc is getting hot as servo is demanding more than the hobbywing internal bec can truly produce amp wise. So anyone else having similar issues

Jeezuz calm that gearing down to about a 8 tooth and you'll have a fighting chance. 27 turn is a bit low of a turn to start with but that gearing is killing the esc.

Yup, your motor must be smoking as well. Recommend going back to stock gearing.

Stock gearing for a trx4 sport is 39/17. For a 2 speed it's 45/11 i actually kicked gearing down 2 teeth on pinion to bring esc temps down which it did but takes longer to get super hot. Motor runs super cool. Servo may get a hair warm but nothing crazy. My holmes 27 turn is about equal to the factory 21 turn 550 sized motor it came with. This isn't my first rodeo with rcs but normally I have both motor and esc get hot or run cool not just one or other. Since I'm running a high torque servo with my hobbywing 1080 internal bec set at 7.4 I'm thinking servo is pulling to many amps causing esc to get hot

Probably that servo, can draw twice what the 1080s Bec is rated to handle.

Xx Losungen xX. That's what I'm thinking cause I have alot of weight upfront meaning that servo is working harder to keep up pulling more amps. Guess I need a cc bec again and go from there

You have a spare steering servo that draws less? Temporarily use it for one run and you'll get an answer immediately. Even a less torque'y one just as a test. Maybe save you the cost of the CC BEC is that's not the case.

I agree on the gearing, not the servo per-se though it may be a combo of both.

Awful high for an somewhat heavy TRX4 (assuming it's a sport with brass goodies) I run anywhere from 9/45 to 12/45 depending on the motor. 15/39 is a 41:1 FDR. Not terrible, but a bit high for a 27t motor. If you are running 3S, that's a big ask.

If dropping 2 teeth on the pinion helped, drop a few more teeth - you're on the right track.

The motor I'm running is about equal to stock. Gearing for trx4 sport is 17/39 stock. I have a trx4 sport. Can't go drop any more teeth pinion wise was going to try and gear it 45/11 like a 2 speed from factory but I think its my servo over amp the hobbywin internal bec. The servo can pull 7amps easy from my research which is double what hobbywings becs rated for.

In most situations, if you are drawing too much current on the BEC you'll brown-out your receiver, causing glitching. Has this been an issue on this rig?

If not, the servo is likely not the problem. Also, you should only see this condition when the servo is bound up, not all of the time.

Its been stalling out hard have to turn it off let it sit then turn back on to.get function again

gearing should be on que for a 27 turn 540 motor when stock it came with a 21 turn 550 motor so slightly bigger. Only changed 6 turns has plenty of wheel speed to much honestly. Factory it was 17/39 for a 21 turn now it 15/39 with a 27 turn and I didn't have issues till this esc

It seems like you are asking for help, received it, but are arguing against any recommendations to try and track down the problem.

Swap to a different Servo

Try different gearing as suggested

If one or both of those tests do not change anything it may be possible you have a faulty ESC. But you wont know until you try

I'm not arguing making a point that the sport is geared 17/39 factory snd i have actually regeared to 15/39. 2 speed trans uses a factory 11/45 ratio. I dont have another servo to try. I think I will get a cc bec and bypass harness and install that. Then go from there and I do plan to gear it 9/45 to take off some wheel speed as its to fast for a crawler/scaler

If not, the servo is likely not the problem. Also, you should only see this condition when the servo is bound up, not all of the time.

Unless you have a specific need to overdrive the front axle, that creates a good deal of unnecessary binding in the drive train which will work the motor and ESC harder than normal. Install the 9/45 gears, I would switch to a 550 can motor in the 21t range (the stock Titan 21T motor is actually pretty good). I would also recommend installing the CC 10a BEC and HH crossover harness.

Its also worth checking for any binding in the axles and tranny as well as at the wheels (make sure they clear the portals). Rubbing or binding can add to the motors load and cause overheating.

I'm going to add a bec soon. No binding in drive train and only thing getting hot is esc. I dont really want to go back to a 21 turn motor I went to 27 turn to slow it a hair and with a holmes rebuidable. So ill start with bec and move from there thank you inspector86

550 21T is not the same as a 540 21T. Two different can sizes.

Shot in the dark but have you checked the pinion and spur to make sure the gear mesh isnt too tight?

Something just occurred to me. What do you have your PWM Frequency item #13 set to? The higher frequency will cause the HW1080 to run hotter.
