Default Hobbywing 1080 ESC Up in Smoke

Blew up my 1080 this past weekend on vacation.

Specs:

Element Enduro kit stock gearing (18T pinion, 48P/87T Spur)
HW 1080 esc (default settings)
Holmes Hobbies Trailmaster Sport 21T
20kg DS Servo rated 4.8-6.8V(the red el-cheapo model many on here run)
Running 3s Batt

Was crawling some steep-pitched rocks, took a pretty good tumble. Heard a ‘pop’ and watched the rig smoke hard for about 20 seconds. Blew a hole out the bottom and side of the ESC.

Do I need to gear down from stock to run 3s?

Faulty ESC?

Any insight would be appreciated

I run my hobbywing 1080 on 3s in my bomber. It's on a Holmes Hobbies Trailmaster Sport 550 21T, gearing is 11T pinion and 64T spur (32pitch).

Runs cool and never had issues

Sounds like just bad luck. I'm using the same ESC on 3s in my TRX4 Sport with stock (17x39t) gearing without issues. Hope the rest of your vehicle is ok.

Appreciate the replies guys, thanks. It sounds like my specs are in line. Might try getting in touch with HW, only put a few days on it so certainly did not get my monies worth.

Rest of the rig seems to be fine, outside of the lingering smell

3S should be fine. I'm running stock gearing with the stock 16t 5-slot motor for the Sendero.

Sounds like just bad luck with the ESC.

Thanks again for the replies, they are much appreciated.

Have the 1080 in a couple of my Ascenders and never had a problem. Always powered them on 2s. Can’t imagine I will ever buy another 2s battery going forward. Have another 1080 on my shelf, so going to give it a second chance in the Enduro.

I would say faulty ESC. Contact HW and see if they'll do anything for you

Always running 3S in mine - Defender with HH 550 21t Trailmaster Sport, and Ascender K10 with loads of brass running the exact same electronics - never an issue with either.

Amazing photographs of the incident, BTW!

it sounds like the impact had something to do with it but seeing as this ESC is potted with a soft conformal coating that doesnt really make sense.

Maybe they've had a bad batch recently?

Thank you

We were shooting some video so the camera couldn’t have been more handy. It was a great day of crawling. Glad it was one of the final runs over that rock.

It was an end over end tumble. It took a few of em over the day. My kids Axial did too. He seemed completely entertained by it, as I think back

I hear you, I would imagine QC on a budget esc is going to have cracks.

I noticed your rig wasn’t wearing a face diaper. That Chinese virus probably caused that, cause you know... China

I have HW1080's in both my TRX4 & TRX6 along with a HW880 in my Deadbolt I run them all on 3s with stock gearing so I don't think 3s is the problem. Maybe something came loose on the inside during the tumble, like a little piece of solder, and shorted out. I would contact Hobbywing and see what happens. Hope you bought it from an authorized HW dealer or they will not warranty it for sure.

Ha! Did break the bumper mount earlier in the day, so the face diaper came off. My own fault for using a thin steel.Prophylactic(bumper) has since been reinstated with heavier duty mounts

I also have several HW1080’s. Pretty sure I bought this one locally now that my LHS carries them. Plan to call them tomorrow, we’ll see what they say.

Where did you buy your HW1080? Hopefully from a licensed retailer? There is such a thing as counterfeit parts which are generally inferior quality.

I am running sensored brushless systems in some other rigs. They are nice, no doubt. Gotta say though, I Still have love for brushed systems in crawlers.

That is the million dollar question at the moment. I have HW1080’s in my three Ascenders(always ran on 2s) and now having purchased 4 1080’s I could not say for sure where this one comes from. If memory serves me correctly I bought one locally, one from Amain, one from a member on RCC whose name I can’t recall and the last one from RCMart. To be honest, I am not 100% where this one comes from and I have just decided to take the hit on it. I should have kept my receipts in order but I did not. Likely because it is such an inexpensive part.
