Hi,
meanwhile they took the "Hobbywing 1080" from description.
So it is just a "new super cheap crawler ESC with program card, nameless"...

Changed the thread title.

The amazing, $40 1080 isn’t cheap enough? It’s well worth more than the asking price.

+1

And it's not like tires where you wear them out and replace them or have different sets for different situations. With an ESC, once it works and installed it pretty stays there for the life of the vehicle.

I agree, the HW 1080 is a great value at $40 US. But from what I hear they can sell for much more than that in other parts of the world.

In that case I can see it making sense.

Whats your problem man?

Where has anybody written it is not "cheap enough"? (The 1080). Why do you assume people wanting to save money?

Couldn't there only be interest in new things, how they work?
I will never understand guys like you...

BTW:
Actually doing a comparison video Hobbywing Quicrun 1080 genuine (do have 5+ of them), Carisma ARC-2 and the new China WP80.
Video will be up in one or two days, will post link here.

Well..it has its limitations and Walter wanted to point out that there are other options which are as good as or not has to be tested.

... and:
If it is not labelled as Hobbywing 1080 I do not have any problems with this ESC.
There are tons of cheap China ESCs from "brands" (Surpass, Racerstar, ...) or brandless out there and nobody complains.

So the only problem was IMO the cheating name... probably to attract people.
And they had success, as we can see, people talk about the ESC and a lot of people (at least in German forum) did already buy it.
They did not buy it because they wanted or needed to save money.
They did buy it because it is interesting, new...

What’s my problem posting a counter opinion on a public forum? How dare I?!

The whole premise of this thread started off discussing the possibility of a cheap clone of the 1080. Taking that gamble makes no sense to me since the 1080 is already cheap and it has a proven track record as a reliable ESC with good performance. Now I see this thread has moved away from it being a clone.

Don’t go assuming I’m against cheap electronics. I started off using the $10 X-Car 45A ESC from HobbyKing and I swore by it for years. I’d have no problem recommending it today if a person couldn’t or wouldn’t spend $40 on the 1080.

It would be nice to get this thread back to actual discussion of how well this ESC works, or doesn't. It is clearly not a HW1080, and the description on BG's site no longer says so.

Why would someone want to use this versus the 1080? Donaldsneffe already gave his reasons, which I think are very good ones.
Quote:
I build tons of tiny trucks, I love this... modifying, new electronics, ...
My 1080 are in my 1/10 trucks.
For those small trucks, cheapos, 50 - 150 bucks about, the 1080 would be a kind of overkill.
But also the AWG 12 wires are a problem. Far too large for XT30 and of course "red JST" or JST PH 2.0. Also thick wires are often a space problem in small trucks.
Since the HW 1080 is sealed and protected from water very well, it is extremely difficult to open the ESC box without damaging (BTW: Same problem in the Hobbywing Platinum heli ESCs).
So I can only cut the AWG 12 wire and then solder thinner wires to the ESC, no good solution, ... what if you wanna use this ESC in a larger truck later again?
And as he also said, it is not about the money. While the 1080 may be a fantastic ESC regardless of price, there are situations where this ESC may be more appropriate for the intended use.

So for those that have purchased this, how is it working?

Guys, I will post my results soon.
Actually doing a video with this new China cheapo "against" the Hobbywing Quicrun 1080 and "against" the Carisma ARC-2 (with active control, but did not test this yet).

Funny as it is, the China Cheapo won the "BEC Servo torque test", I could not believe this...
PWM frequency settings work (as in the others), at 16 kHz it is absolutely quiet (as the others).

But it does not come with a manual and the description on the program card is extremely small and hard to read.
There is a "problem" when counting the different items/steps (there are 19) on the program card, if you go from 10 to 11 it lights up 2 instead of 1 led more... so higher than 10 you have to ad 1 light (11 = 12, and so on, 19 = 20).
Program point 19 PWM frequency is labelled in wrong order, labelling says 5 is 1 kHz and 1 is 16 kHz, but it is vice versa (same order as in the 1080).

That is what I so far did and is on video.

Details and simple drive- and dragbrake tests will follow...

I will keep you updated.

BTW I'm glad to see the Bangood item no longer references HW nor does it have similar photos.

They may have been asked to make the changes by HW.

Hi,
finally I finished my tests, comparing the "China Cheapo WP 80 A" with the Hobbywing Quicrun 1080 and the Carisma ARC-2.

The Cheapo did surprisingly well.
Everything worked fine, BEC seems even to be stronger than in the HW 1080 and the Carisma.

Negative:
No manual, programming not as convinient as in the others, wrong order of PWM settings on program-cart labels.

This does not mean I do recommend this ESC.
Those were only bench and indoor tests, has to be seen how this ESC performs and holds up in the field, with water, ....

Here the test video:
