Radio/ transmitter thoughts
 

Well good morning all. I’m mid way through a Vanguish VS4-10 Willys truggy build. I’ve been a Futaba guy over the years but looking at options for this new build. Don’t laugh.. My current radio is a futaba twin stick from when I built my new and exciting XR10 once upon a time. It has all the channels which made it nice. It’s also used for my 1/6 scale Willys. So I’m Considering a 5 channel from spectrum. The rugged seems to have its issues. Or just stick with the “stick” controller? Looking forward to hearing some opinions.

Pretty sure the Spektrum Rugged issues were corrected with current product.

The Spektrum is a good controller and shouldn't be ruled out. Also look at the Flysky GT5, lots of features for not a lot of money...and extra rx's are cheap.

Another inexpensive option is the Flight GT3C. But, if going the GT3 route, make certain you get the 'C', and not the 'B'. Going back to Futaba (I'm a Futaba guy), the 4PM would be a great option.

I am pretty new to this stuff but I have gotten a Dx5c (not the rugged) and find it to be pretty good-
using it with a TRX-4 sport kit and added 2 speed trans so currently 3 channels in use.


I do like the flexibility it has and being able to run multiple trucks with it.

If you are used to a stick controller, your thumbs are going to be fighting each other for a little bit when you switch to a pistol grip. It isn't a big issue, but it will feel weird until you get used to it.

I like my Spektrum gear, it just works. I have a DX5R, DX5C and DX6e, all great reliable controllers. From what I have read, the Rugged has been brought up to snuff with the rest of Spektrum's gear, so it should work well for you.

If you are on a budget, there are always the Flysky radios. I am not a fan of these, they just feel chintzy and I have seen too many of them fail.

Although I have a Futaba 4PLS and multiple Spektrum (DX3C & DX4C) radios, I find the menu on the Spektrum radios easier to navigate. I do like the feel of the Futaba throttle trigger as it feels "heavier." If I had to buy another radio, I would choose Spectrum. I've never had one problem with any of my Spektrum radios

I'm a big fan of the FlySky GT3C hacked for extra channels and improved programmability..

I’m a big fan of the radio link controllers. I started out with the fly sky that I hacked. But I’m I big fan of the 3 position switches and lack of menu diving. Got mine for 67 bucks about a year ago.

I have a flysky noble that I have been happy with. It has 8 channels, 10 buttons, and 2 rotary pot's. 6 can be programmed as 3 way. It is a touch screen, color display. Has a 2000mah in the handle and a 4000mah battery in the base, you will not run out of battery on the trail no matter how long your day is. It is not cheap feeling like the other flysky models, which i have had. It has mixing, so I set up my blizzard with it. The blizzard has 2 motors and esc's that needs to have Channels 1 and 2 running at the same time, works great. It also has a crawler mode that controls 2 servos if you want rear steering. Options are front steer, rear steer, front and rear same direction, and front and rear opposite direction.

Thanks for all the input, today I picked up the Spektrum Rugged. Hopefully I got the one without all the issues. Also picked up another receiver for the 1/5th scale Willy’s to share the radio with.

Takes some programming but once you figure it out they work great
