make up my mind about an ESC upgrade.

Question: what ESC should I buy?

Background: I have a Capra, and SCX 10III. I do not comp, just run in the rocks. Our driving spot ranges from bada$$ rock climbs to trailing. I run 3S 1500mah.

Things to keep in mind:
price point (obviously)
programmability
reliability

Please help as I'm totally lost on the electronics part. Any and all input is appreciated.

Hobbywing 1080. Comes with a program card with tons and tons of configurations, cheap, waterproof, and pretty much the go-to for most crawlers. I think most will tell you the Hobbywing 1080. Only problem, at least my problem is I don’t run XT60 battery connectors, I use Traxxas, but there are plenty of adapters out there, and if you can’t find one grab a soldering iron and learn how to lol. Always helps to learn more skills.

Are you looking for brushed or brushless? An awesome brushed ESC on a budget would be the Hobbywing 1080. Light, inexpensive, waterproof, and programable.

Is your 10iii the RTR version with the Firma 40? Those are programmable, if you were not aware.

1) Budget, brushed, programmable option: Hobbywing 1080 with a Holmes Brushed motor of your liking. Great crawling, decent power, nice and quiet

2) Brushless, highly programmable, less budget friendly option : Mamba X with Holmes brushless motor of your liking. Great crawling and big power. Lots to love with this set-up

Above have been my favourite two

3) the odd option. Castle Sidewinder sensorless esc with a Holmes Revolver.

I will echo what smog says.

Hard to beat the 1080 for budget brushed needs.

Sw4 can also be used with a brushed motor if you so desire. Tuning is awesome with the castle link adapter (sold separately, requires a pc to use as well). Sw4 and revolver is a pretty wild combo, but loud. Would not recommend for trailing.

The firma 40 is pretty good in my experience (although not long term). you can adjust all but one setting with the hobby wing 1080 program card. Drove as well as my 1080 equipped cars.

I’ve used several rtr servos (reedy, axial, dynamite, traxxas, spektrum) and don’t recommend any of them except I would use the firma40 if I ran a spektrum radio and only needed a 3ch receiver.

I am moving towards castle esc’s since I use castle bec’s and like castle link programming.
Haven’t tried any tekin products but I’m sure they are awesome.

The firma 40a is essentially a 4 channel.. you can run a steering, dig and shift servo just need a 5 channel tx to utilize the additional channel
