Default Elite 1500 2/3A Venting?

I have been running these type cells for a year now and I just built a new pack and on the first charge I was sitting by them and I heard a popping noise from the pack as it neared being fully charged. This isnt normal in my experience, but what is causing it, are they venting and if so why? The charger is a Novak Ionic set on Nimh, 6 cell, 1 amp. Thanks for the help
The cells in question are brand new

Maybe you got one to hot while soldering it.

If it was the first charge, 1 amp was too much. You should have charged it at .1 or .2 amps so that the lesser charged cells could catch up with the higher voltage cells. Did you put a voltmeter to the cells before building the pack? Could have had a dead cell in there too.

I didnt check for a dead cell first.. I didnt know that would be an issue. At this piont is my pack ruined? I ran it and it performed well. Should I charge at a lower setting for the second charge? Thanks JRH

Popping noises generally are not good, but it could have been the pack rubbing against itself as it heated up. Discharge the pack close to dead, check each cell with a voltmeter, then recharge at .1 amp for the next 4 charges. After you charge it once check the cells again and see if they are all close to the same voltage. You should have them all within .2v or so of each other.

I have heard that trickle charging brand new NiHM packs to their first peak is best.

I had a pack vent, I had the amps to high. It seems to function like the others.
