Default new to brushless, gearing question.

If this is in the wrong section, please move it the proper section.

I just hooked up my scorpion 3014 brushless motor and it doesnt seem as spunky as my mag mayhem. Im running the Mamba max with a 18087 gearing. I was wondering if the gearing is different compared to a brushed motor. thanks for all the help in advance, im still learning the brushless.

Here's some advice from JRH himself, volt up and gear down. What kind of batt are you running? How many cells?

To get the wheelspeed of a mag mayhem, you have two options. You can either gear up with a larger pinion (not my favorite option), or you can gear down and then volt back up for your wheelspeed (thanks Tanis) Gearing lower allows for better startups and less load on the motor. Volting up not only increases your wheelspeed, but it increases the motor power as well.

If you want nutz power, install as large of a spur and small of a pinion as you can find. Then run it on your two gp3300 packs in series. It would be overkill if this is a 2.2 though, too much battery weight.

Anything less than 8 cells on a MM/3014 is going to be disappointing. I've caught a lot of flack about the weight involved, but I've been running two of the venom 3600's on my WK with a similar setup. It's got plenty of wheel speed, and it'll break parts on demand.

VERY good advise there. Every rig/motor combo will be different. On my super with a Twin Force tranny/3025-8 Hyperion/Mamba Max I like it at 55:1-60:1 gearing and 10 cells. VERY peppy and will shread gears clean without the slightest strain. The rig is right at 12 pounds. If this motor was in a truck a little lighter, you could probably get away with a bit taller gear.

In my 2.2,I'm running a R2 tranny/3014 Crawlmaster/Mamba 25. I've got a 18 tooth pinion in the R2 but have no idea what kinda ratio that gives. I wish there was a chart that showed that about the R2. Turning 5 3/4" tires and getting power from a 2 cell lipo,it's got pleanty of torque and decent wheelspeed. I'd like to try a 20 tooth pinion or a 3 cell lipo to boost wheelspeed to where it should be. If I go to a 3 cell lipo,I'll probably gear down a tooth or two on my pinion. Gearing down will improve low speed throttle response, start up's and cogging on an outrunner.

i would run 2 battery's but that would be WAY to much weight in my opion. is there like a cheap set up for a lipo that i could go with. maybe like a 2-3 cell lipo with a cheap charger? maybe a charger only for lipo's?

Lipo+Cheap=:-(

But I have been running Mr. Holmes 4000 mah 3 cell lipo in my super and it rocks, its about the same size as a 7 cell stick pack, a little shorter and alot lighter, but stays around 12 volts through most of its charge. Its around $45 is I remember. I use a triton Jr charger, $90. It will charge anything, Nimh, nicd, lipo, liion, and lead acid. Its a good upgrade for all of your charging needs.

I havent got around to getting a balancer yet:-( right now I am just cycling it every time. As for my power supply, I jacked one out of an old computer that my work was throwing out, found the 2 12v hot wires and just hook up to them. Works great and it was free.

I just use a balancing charger on my lipo setup - it's not much, cost wise.
