I'm looking at getting a new charger. Can I mod my current charger to be a 12v power source? Its an Astro Flight AC/DC Astro Model 114d. I was thinking since it is an AC/DC unit i might be able to?

It does have an ac/dc transformer. Depending on what you are wanting to use it for, it may or may not have enough VA (Volt-amps)(watts). What do you want to power?

It would work, but for how long, I can't say. Primary transformer may get pretty hot, smell, smoke, catch fire, any one.....or nothing may happen. You'd really have to measure the current on the primary when charging. Seems like alot of trouble. Why not just use a 12v automobile battery?

Another option as a 12V source is an old PC power supply. There are instructions on how to prepare it for non-PC use all over the intarwebs. A lot of power supplies go bad on their 3.3v or 5v rails, but the 12v is fine. And they put out in the neighborhood of 20A at 12v, to boot! Here's a page I just found doing just what you want: http://customers.swcp.com/~tandberg/...pplyATX_03.htm I prefer the terminal posts done this way (less sketchy): http://www.instructables.com/id/EQDUN2ZF5R8IUK7/ Last edited by Halfshaft; 09-03-2007 at 05:44 PM.
