Hey, Has anyone ever seen a battery casing MELT? This didn't happen in a crawler, rather in a HVMAXX powered Emaxx, but still........................it's kinda messed up. I've NEVER had this happen in all my many years of RC. Any thoughts from anyone on how this would happen? Too high a gear ratio perhaps causing a too high current draw? HELP!

it happened to me!but mine was much worse. i noticed that there was a little bit of water in mine and that was why it melted. check to see if there is any water. the battery should still work. mine does.i just need new shrink wrap

ILoveRCRockCrawlin: There was no water present in or around the battery. I don't see how water would cause a pack to overheat to this extent. How did you get water in yours? And to be honest, I think I'll be retiring the pack after this. The "meltdown" has left me a little bit warry about trying to recharge it. I'm thinkin' if the cells got hot enough to melt plastic and deform the pack shape, then their was likely some internal damage. Anyone else ever seen this? Anyone else have thoughts on what would cause this?

the water caused my pack to overheat because it was shorting out. it only overheated when i was charging it. i got water in it because i was drivng it water and snow. i built a plow for my tlt so thats why i had it in the snow and i had it in the water because water is fun to play around in with a rc truck.

Definitely looks like a high amp draw caused it. Those Tamiya connectors on the battery aren't helping things either. I'll guess that the battery cables and connectors got hot as well.

Ya, everything was pretty toasty. It was actually pretty creepy. The Tamiya plugs will be Deans from now on, and I think I'm gonna drop my pinion on the emaxx from a 17t to a 14t (with a 72t spur). Hopefully that should make everything run a lil' cooler. Here's hoping.......................

welcome to the world of high amp motors. you need to go farther than just deans plugs. 1. the connectors for the battery pack need to be deans 2. the connection between cells needs to be direct soldered or have battery bars. NO THIN TIN STRIPS! 3. it helps to have matched packs. one odd cell can overheat easy and ruin the pack. i would bet that you have a dead cell in your pack. either buy better packs or spend the time rebuilding some packs. past that, shorten your wires as much as possible too. if you are running your esc with 24 inches of wires, then you are causing a lot of heat. i have caused fires from using cheap packs with brushless motors. its not pretty.

It's the stupid tin foil and Tamiya connectors causing all of this, switch to Deans and make the pack a side by side: you'll get more power, runtime, and much cooler running. I've done this to a few Epic 3000 packs, pretty cheap cells and packs in general, but they kick with battery bars and perform far far better.

Back in my wee days of Rc i was trying to charge a 1400 radioshack battery while it was in the batt tray of my E-pede, with a dynamite timer charger. that was before I knew about the whole timer chargers suck thing and that you have to watch them... well i went outside to do something and the batt over charged melted through the battery tray of my pede and dirrectly onto my carpet. it burned the shit out of my roomīs carpet, caused lots of smoke damage and looked like my hause was burning down before my dad ran in and fire extinguished my room. i got grounded for about 4 months and had my RCīs taken for almost a year and now they arenīt allowed in our house only in the garage. stupid mistakes....

My cousin melted the shrink wrap on his venom 3000 pack as well. He had the correct gearing, but the gear mesh was way too tight, which caused everything to overheat.

Thanx for all the feedback guys. The cheapo-pack is finding a home in the trash, and 2 sets of side-by-side 7cell GP3300 packs with bars and deans connectors are on the way. Geeze, I gotta stick to just crawling more.............at least there doesn't seem to be fire risk in a 5mph Clod!

Hey, I have the same problem right now...my battery does not get hot anymore but now my motor and speed control still seem to get pretty hot. The first time it did this everything was stock. I have a modified tlt and I can't run it inside the house without burning up wires. I have already replaced all the connectors and soldered the wires to the motor to eliminate any bad connections. I have a orion 17 turn with a novak 1 touch programmable speed control. Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this?
