Default Lath motor run time problem

Just changed to a lathe motor from a stock 540 TXT motor and the run time went from 30-45 minutes to less than 15. Only other change was a 12 tooth pinion to a 15 on a GD600. Even tried running the lathe motor with a 9 tooth pinion and no GD 600 but the run time did not increase. Battery pack is a 1500 MAH.
Searched and found other people stating run times of 45 minutes to an hour. Any thoughts or suggestions to solve the problem would be appreciated.

Thanks, Old_Dog

No I did not break in the motor. Was not aware that it needed to be broken in. How would that be done?

Just did search for a breakin procedure and found one thread. Looks like I should run the motor under low voltage for ten minutes. Will try that next and hope it works. Any other suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Maybe the timing is not set at 0? Did you reverse the pos/neg on the motor?

I'm running a Super Rooster ESC and two HS645 servos with No RX pack. The motor timing is set at 0. Am attemtpting to breakin the motor this morning using two D batteries. Will try again this evening to see if it has any effect on the run time.

Hey old dog, are you still running the 600 on there now? on my setup at GR that you seen, I was getting 1 1/2 hr runtime with the 27t motor on the 600.

when i just ran a lathe w/ 9t-72 combo, i got around 55mins runtime.

i didn't break the motor in either. but when i got the motor, there are 2 pieces at the top of the motor( don't know all the motor lingo ) but one on each side at the end on the endbell. they have the little springs hooked to them and slide in and out. anyway, i had to mess with those since they was not seated properly against the motor. even if you had the lathe motor with the timing set ahead and you reversed the wires on it to use with the GD600, it really shouldn't have mattered. you would have put the motor retarded in time, which actually should give you more torque and a longer runtime, but wouldn't be good for the motor.

i would mess with those 2 at the top and make sure they are seated good and try to break it in. hopefully that will work

Twisted,

I am still running the 600 but I changed the 9 tooth to a 12 after GR to gain back some wheel speed. When I installed the lath I went to a 15 to also get wheel speed. The run time went into the toilet.
Spent some time before work to breakin the motor using two D batteries. I will look at the springs on the end bell to see if they are making good contact.
Suspect that I am going to have to start running an RX pack. Just hate to do that because of the weight.

well you shouldn't have to run an RX pack with the SR and those servos. something is causing it, cause you wasn't running one at GR was you?

Check your motor brushes the stock ones are kind of crappy in my opinion. Get some silver brushes. When I went to silver brushes I noticed a torque increase. The motors spin so slow you don't need to worry about the wear. A stock spring broke on me while crawling one day. So I went with the stiffer purple trinity springs. I'm running a clod with a SR and two servos and my runtimes are sometimes a hour long with the 3300 gp cells. You problem is definitely is your motor if the old titan worked fine.

I never broke mine in I thought that you would not need to being that these motors spin so slow already.

with the rx pack when you turn you dont take power from you main pack. if you do alot of turning without an rx run goes down the drain. i run an rx with two futaba high torques and i get double the runtime, if i run it off my speed control i get crap for run time. i turn alot.

It appears the problem has been solved. Not sure if it was breaking the motor in this morning or checking the brushes and springs later in the day. Just got complete a crawling session of about 45 minutes and the truck was still running strong at the end.
Thanks to everyone for helping resolve this issue. Your assistance is sincerely appreciated.

This is something that I just found with a new pair of lathe motors.

Put them on dyno to do break in and the motor would not start up, When i took it apart, I found that the com was very out of round, they both had a taper of about .005 from the endbell in, so just a very small part of the brush was touching the com, after the cut they were fine.

Just thought it might help if others have problems, its something to look for..
