WestCoastPJ is correct. That switch will work fine.

Glad I could help you PJ. I look forward to seeing your work.

My ISP was having issues. They should be resolved by now.

Of course, if you don't like the service you can always ask for a refund!

Didn't know if I should start a new thread or expand upon this one.

Decided to keep it in one place so it would be easier for the noobs!
I must say I never would have figured this out with out Banito's information!

Adding EPA to TQ3 front steering

I called Allied Electronics at 1-800-433-5700, and ordered part # 3386F-1-202. There is a $25 min order, so get with your buds because they are only about a $1 each

Figure A)
After opening the TQ3, I cut the yellow and green wires coming from the front steering knob.

Figure B)
Soldered the micro pots to the wires like this.

Figure C)
Super Glued pot together side by side. Then used painters tape and a pencil to trace outline of pots.

Figure D)
Placed painters tape on top of radio, and used as a template to drill access holes.
Note: Pots will hang out a little, so make sure you take that into account when placing the tape.

Last picture shows pots aligned with holes. Then pots were tacked with super glue in position. After checking to see if everything works, and goes back together correctly. Secure pots with a dab of epoxy.

That's it!

Used this mod all day at Boulder Bash with no problems!

I will be adding how I did my rear steer switch mod very soon!

I just did the rear steer thing with my TQ3 tonight. I replaced the steering trim pot with a 5k pot wired in place of the original rocker switch. I relocated the steering trim to the top of the radio and wired the rocker switch for the shift to the center wire going to the rear steer pot. I flip the rocker switch up to enable rear steer, which i run with my thumb on a small wheel. To center and disable the rear steer, I just flip the rocker switch down. Thanks to all for the ideas in this thread.

Got pics?

Sounds like a good deal with the smaller wheel and rear steer. I've been aiming to tear my TQ3 apart and instal pots and rear steer switch. I got caught up in redoing a few things on the rig. The rigs done now and time to work on the radio. I think I'd like a smaller wheel instead of a toggle for the rear axle

The 5k pot and small wheel are from the throttle trim of an old Futaba pistol radio I had. The pot has 31 positions with detents. Makes it a bit easier to find neutral if I don't feel like centering it with the switch. I've only run it around the house a bit, so I don't know how well it will work in the rocks. I have big hands, so I can move the rear steer wheel with my thumb.

what about the charging jack? is it just wired right to the battery terminals with 12V and about 1-0.5 amp?

I think there's only so much you can do with a pistol grip radio. I mean modding my TQ3 was a great way to kill time but if I was going to compete I'd probably just use a dual stick radio like my Futaba 9C. There's just way more flexibility and granularity of control with a good 2 stick radio.
Soo... IF you can find a good mounting spot AND get a centering mechanism.. full proportional rear steering is that simple???
I'm planning to take the steering pot and centering mechanism off a donor radio and attach it to the backside of my TQ3.... that should work, RIGHT?

that would work but theres not all that much room in a tq3 pluss it would probably get quite confusing... believe me. Just go with a On/off/on switch or 2 momentary push button switches and you will be perfectly happy. Check out my tq3 build up thread.

Thanks to FritoBandito...My modded TQ3

I was reading into this and it seems to me that you can use basically any kind of switch... well I was thinking along the lines of an old N64 joystick and just mount it on the side where you added your rudder switch. My question is do you think it would just pick up the side to side movements and not try to get the up and down? I guess what Im asking is there a way to make it so itll only read left and right not up,down, left, right?

you will need to measure the ohm resistance of that switch and determand wich wires show the resistance varying to side to side movement.and to see if the resistance is in range to work.meaning about the same resistance as the switchs mention in previous posts here

These would be better because they are single turn.

Link to ebay

Plus it's a better bargain.

The charger I use is a wall wart that came with M8 rechargable pack. It's 9.6v/50mA. I picked up eight Venom 2400mA NiMH for $20, they should do the trick. My TQ3 Tx and Rx was 20 bucks new, another 10 bucks for a toogle, four pots, and a charge jack. Works killer and super cheap.

Nice work.

I am in need of a 3ch. radio for it's rear steer capabilities.
I don't have any soldering skills so it looks like I'm going to take the easy (expensive) way out.

Does the TQ3 from the crawler store have proportional Rear steer?

Does it have return to center?

Is it the same as what you've done w/yours?

Thanks.

the one from the crawler store has a 3 way switch, it is all the way left, all the way right, and center. I can make you one with epa pots and charging jack, even make it proportional.
