Default Stock Trailwalker and upgrades

Im 100% new to RC and crawlers and just ordered a trailwalker as my first. I was wondering how good the stock tires are that come on it? Should I look for upgrades now, go larger for more ground clearance, stick with 1.55s or simply run them till there gone? What does everyone recommend for budget metal beadlocks if I decide to go with bigger tires?

After watching some videos I also want to strengthen up the chassis as much as possible. How much of a weight difference is the aluminum parts compared to the hard plastic parts that Element offers or does it not matter that much? Any pros/cons of one over another?

Last thing is bodies, is hard bodies not really worth it due to overall weight?

I have used the search button and read a lot the past week but also wanted to start my first thread, hope thats cool! Thanks for any help!

Hi welcome to the hobby. I tried my TrailWalker out with the 1.55 tries and wheels. Well the stock tires seem decent, they are just too small vs the 1.9 wheels and tires unless your doing a scale comp and have to run that size of wheel and tire. I’ve tried several combinations of tires and misc bodies I have laying around. I ran the Hyrax tires they are 4.85 tall and ran a cut up Comanche body. That combo climbed wheel. But those tires are way too tall for the stock body. I tried running taller body posts with the stock body and Hyrax tires. Then the body sits too tall. Right now I have the stock body with the wheel wells cut out and have Pitbull Berserker they are 4.35 x 1.45x1.9 they seem to pretty good with the stock body. A company called Sami’s make brass components to weight the car down if you need more weight. I just go have fun with mine. I think if I were scale crawling then I would weight my truck down then.

SSD steel beadlocks are a great choice for moving up to 1.9" size wheels and not breaking the bank.

Even though they are steel, they are not very heavy because the thickest part (the hub) is aluminum.

SSD, Samix, and Club 5 Racing all carry aluminum and brass upgrade parts.

Aluminum parts don't add much weight, but there's no need to go nuts and get everything out there!

I'd upgrade as you go along, replace what breaks with aluminum(or maybe a bit of brass on the axles, especially the front).

Hardbodies are a world unto themselves - yes they increase your center of gravity, but they do allow for a much more detailed body.

However, they also require different body mounts, too.

Enjoy!

Thanks guys, jeeptec I like the way that looks and will probably be the route I go with wheels and tires until I swap bodies at some point to a Jeep. Durok, thanks for the info on the parts Im looking into them now and I also about the hard bodies.

Well I just couldnt resist myself while waiting on my Element to come in so I have ordered some upgrade goodies from club5, samix and st racing thanks to the easy to find and browse Element vendor section. All the stuff I ordered is to stiffen up the chassis and Im going to run it in stock RTR form then go from there. Now I just need everything to ship, waiting is always the hardest part!

Hey Jeeptec how high did you have to go on the body mounts with the 1.9 and fenders cut

Right now I’m at stock post height or maybe one hole up. I cut along the lines of the flare to body. If I run my Pitbull Bezurker tires I don’t rub. They are 4.45 tall. If I run my Proline Hyrax tires they are 4.89 tall I think they rub, but not too bad. I have a Comanche body the has the flares and fenders cut out and have to run tall Axial posts on it. I have no rub with that body.

I get it. Swapping out the 1.55's for 1.9 wheels and tires is definitely going to give you an improvement in crawling capability, but I have a lot of other 1.9 rigs, so I wanted to stick with 1.55's on my Trailwalker. I prefer the looks of 1.55's on the TW, and the challenge of picking lines with small tires.

Pitbull Braven Berzerkers are really nice-looking scale tires. They are available in 1.55 also.

...and they hook up. But at 3.95" tall, they will rub a little.

The Rock Beast 1.55's are a little better at 3.85".

But they still rub / tuck.

If you really want to go small, you can always try the Pitbull Rock Beast XOR'
s in 1.55. I think they are like 3.75" tall, but quite wide. They look a bit too small on the TW, but man, do they have amazing grip!

djr01974, which tires and rim combos are those? I'm in the market for new tires/rims and was comparing my options too.

The super swampers that are in the last picture are the set off my redcat with crawler innovations part number 3005 with the ribs trimmed off. I think I’m liking the smaller tires but it really hard to decide. They both look good and the klr tires seem to do a nice job on the rocks

Well the trailwalker has morphed into a few things before getting to this point 1st picture of when I mounted a yota body with a cage. 2nd picture is when I pull the cage and put the bed on with some 1.9 wheels and bfg tires. The 3rd picture in what did tonight. Found a RC4WD tf2 body new on eBay for a sweet deal then cut it up to resemble the marlin crawler. 1.55 ssd wheels and pit bull growlers

Added some contrast on the baby blue. Found some cheap axial tires on offer up and they perform way better! Also swapped the roll bar arms and used to wheel center caps as spacers to support and re mount it.
