I've done winch mods and I'm old school and never seen that kind of winch set up ..Pretty cool...
Is that your cable or it like a shoe lace...

I recommend Fusion 360 for the designing, it is free for hobbyists and somewhat user friendly. Also, plenty of good tutorials out there as well. If you got any questions, just ask.

Thank you! I did try some yesterday, but made the bed floor a bit to narrow, . The length is right, so I should be able to use it for ridges.

The winch is a kinetic setup, aka bungee cord, by DSM Offroad. I have it routed starting at the front bumper mount, then going around a pulley at rear bumper mount, and finally out through the front. I just pull it out and attach it to something secure. Best part is I don't have to reel it back in when done.

A little off topic and read the thread on here still have to play catchup..

The fusion 360 that you speak of does it put in the measurements for you or do you have input them in yourself... I'm doing a little homework and looking at 3d printer and this is where I'm confused on the CAD programming part.

I actually tried to use Fusion 360, but I just couldn’t get behind it. So, I hopped onto Sketchup, Downloaded an Export STL extension, and have been using it ever since. I didn’t know where anything was on Fusion 360, but I may give it a try my next few prints.

When designing parts, you need to dimension the parts. Mostly done while making sketches and features. It is possible to scan parts using a 3D scanner, but the program will need a reference dimension.

As for getting the file ready for printing, just export to an .STL file. As for printing, I don’t have a printer, been using print shops like i.materialize and Shapeways. (I live in a small apartment, so a 3D printer is a bad idea.)

I know what you mean. I started with Inventor, moved to SolidWorks, and had to work with Pro-E for a job. Most of those are paid, and quite expensive.

Fusion is a bit different as it is top down design instead of SolidWorks bottom up design.

I am glad you like it! I actually designed it myself using Fusion 360 and had i.materialize print it for me out of MJF Polyamide. I could send you the .stl file if you would like to print it.

I’ll send it over this evening. I’ll probably end up hosting most of the parts on thingiverse at some point.

As for the bumper, the light bar is a Proline 2”, and the fair lead is the mini RC4WD version. The posts are the Axial/Element spacing, but these are short posts. Normal length ones run into clearance issues with the IFS.

The mounting holes are for the Element bumper mount.

So I went and did something that is irreversible to the body tonight.




I decided to start on the drop tonight. I cut the molded bed/roll bar out of the body. Kinda reminds me of the SUV to Pickup conversions actually.

I got started on the prototype today. I am building the walls out of .04”(1mm) polystyrene and some bones out of .188”(5mm) square bar. Here is what the bottom of the bed looks like after a few hours of work:

I haven’t started to detail it out yet though. The lower bones are slightly wider than the frame to make room for the frame rails. Here is what it looks like in the truck right now:


Depth of the bed is now at 2” roughly.

The upper angle looks a bit strange, but it should be off the cab by .4” to make a nice rail.

I’ll be working on the firewall tomorrow, and the sidewalls during the week.

Heya Guys,

I got started on the drop bed today. Currently trying a hybrid approach after some sticker shock last night.

I started off the day by getting design done via pencil and paper. I came up with a “skeleton” structure for the bed. It actually changed a bit through our the day.

Here is one of the “bones” and the general shape of the bed:


Colorado’s have the U-Shape bed, so normal box is out of the picture. I am planning on going to boat building route for the basic shape.

Here is a preview:


I am going to be making 3 more U-Shape “bones” and some connecting braces tomorrow. Then I’ll add the floor and braces.

Well hopefully I’ll have another update tomorrow.

Really nice build thread. Is the presence of the winch to satisfy SORCA rules? That is the first winch I have seen that is not servo powered.

Look forward to the rear suspension/truck bed conversion. Thanks for posting it up. I have been considering the possibility of building out a bed in my Enduro as well. Want to try and keep it light using the thinnest sheet i can get away with

I am going to be working with .02”(.5mm) plate for the main bed to start with. Probably do a double layer though.

If you go the route I did beware that rear becomes a lot softer. I’ll need to go to blue springs instead of gray.

As for the wench, it is partially for comps as they are recommended/needed. We run timed comps locally, and time isn’t paused for letting a wench out. Also, I don’t have to worry about reeling in this style of wench while climbing.
