Default Jim's Enduro Power Wagon

So I picked this up on a trade w/ a fellow member in the forum. It was unbuilt and the original owner had ordered the full complement of "hard" parts, which was a real bonus. My kit went together really well, so nice not to have part trees!

Had been wanting to try a Power Wagon body for a while now, so got me one from Proline. My only regret is that I now think it looks too pretty to throw at our local crawler course!

The body might be sitting a little high, but I didn't want to perform the surgery on the side trays and battery mount required to bring it down.

Let me know what y'all think!

Looks great, but even better with the fenders trimmed and set down on the chassis!

Thanks, I’m still considering lowering it.

Looks like the color MikesRCH uses. Tamiya Cobalt Green.

Thanks it's "Bright Aqua Green" brushed on. I live in a condo so spray painting's not possible for me. This stuff comes in a very thick almost paste-like consistency, but of course can be easily thinned to whatever consistency you want. Oh, and the price comes out a tiny fraction of Tamiya paints.

Thanks, I was gonna go w/ a copper/orange (like the Proline adds), but when we were at the craft store choosing wifey convinced me this color would go well on a vintage truck. Guess she was right!

That's interesting that you brushed it on! How well does that line of paint stick to the lexan bodies?

Definitely interesting about the paint, I would never have guessed it was brushed on.

I live in an apartment and end up making my patio look like a kill scene from Dexter by laying plastic everywhere before I paint.

PWag looks good, nice to see it with the fenders and running boards still on there.

Body came out great!

hmmm I though for sure you had use the PS-54 cobalt green from Tamiya, it looks pretty darn close (thats what I used on my power wagon) https://www.rpphobby.com/product_p/tam86054.htm

this is painted on the outside though

I cant seem to dig it up now but I did find pics of the 1:1 in a very similar color which is cool.

Brushed on?!😲

Wow, I’d have never known!

Now what we’re all wanting to know is how the durability is.

How well does it adhesive to polycarbonate?

Regardless, it looks gorgeous.👍🏼

It sticks fine, at the end of the day, all the supposed "specialized" RC paints like Tamiya are just acrylic too. A trick I use, is to lightly score the body with the scratchy side of our kitchen sponge when cleaning the body to promote paint adhesion. I've been doing this on all my lexan bodied crawlers and they're holding up well so far!

Oh, and if you want to really cheap-out, even latex house paint works well, here it is on my BOM. BTW Soze, your video helped a lot w/ that build as the instructions were confusing for me at times.

and the end product

Thanks Casey, coming from you that means a lot!!

At $7.50 for 250ml the Liquitex paint comes out at, I dunno, maybe 1/10 of the cost of the Tamiya rattle can if thinned down enuf for airbrush application?

Anyway, I really dig the bumper on your PW, is it one of your custom 3D printed jobs??

Thanks for kind words Sir, see my reply to Soze! {EDIT} Oh, I forgot to add that brushed-on unfortunately doesn't work for metallic colors, as there's no way to avoid the streaks left behind by the brush strokes.

I don’t want to hi-jack Jim’s thread, but his statement about the acrylic paint he used really got me curious. 🤔

So I did some research, turns out he’s right!

Talk about opening up a world of colors and saving us money!

Acrylic Plastics (PMMA), ABS plastics and Polycarbonatesare examples of polar plastics and therefore, typically have higher surface energy and improved adhesion for acrylic paints! 😲

Cleaning with alcohol, a light scuff definitely improves adhesion with Polycarbonate.

Might not be news to some, but really opened my eyes!

Thanks Jim! The wheels are turning! 😈

That is a 3D printed bumper, made for the HPI Venture.

Hi-jack away, happy to be of service to the forum! And I can do you one more: If you continue your research into acrylic paints you’ll find that acrylic and latex paints are basically the same thing too! It’s just that latex paints are of a lower quality, I believe because they have less pigment particles, but you can actually mix the two paints if need be.

Using craft store acrylics also opens up huge possibilities for mixing custom colors that you can’t get from rattle cans.
