Default N.A.'s berg rebuild / build

Since the '08-'09 comp season is over it's time to build for the '09-'10 comp season. After 10 months of my GC2 TLT shafty it was time to move on. The CVD's were breaking every three battery packs from the heavy bead locks as well as the tall, soft compound tires. The lowly TLT CVD just could not handle it.

Also adding to the mix was a recent family trip to California. My son and I brought our 2.2 comp crawlers with us for the trip so we could comp and practice with the Nor Cal guys. Needless to say my GC2 TLT was completely unprepared for the terrain since we have nothing like it here in East Texas. My son's GC2 Axial did much better. Most of the Nor Cal guys were running bergs and it was clear to me the direction I wanted to head in for the new comp season.

Upon returning to East Texas I was able to secure a trade with dezfan for this:

dezfan's berg came ARTR, only needing a Tx and Rx. The specs on the berg consisted of these items:

- KK Zero 4.0 Chassis Kit (KK Battery Tray, KK Chassis Skid, KK Dig Plate ((electro disco switches, Deans plugs and dig servo included)), KK Drag Link w/ Revo Rod Ends KK High Clearance Links w/ Revorodends)
- KK Zero T Chassis
- Berg axles
- Hitec 5995TG 333 oz servo
- Team Brood 35T motors
- Sidewinder ESC w/ Deans
- 20C 3S 2200mAh Lipo w/ Deans
- Castle BEC
- Axial stub axles
- Berg Servo Mount
- JP Custom RC Rear Axle Lock Outs
- Axial 98mm upper links (front)
- Traxxas 106mm upper link (rear)
- Mayhem Aluminum Berg Offset Bead Locks
- Mayhem Delrin Berg Offset bead locks
- Panther Cougars (4)
- Pro Line Chisels (4)
- Panther F-400 Foams (6)
- Panther F-310 Foams (2)
- Losi 90mm Shocks w/ White Springs (F) and Yellow Springs (R)
- Venom Creeper Body
- VP BTA/OTA High Clearance Knuckles (NIP) not installed
- 2 Holmes Hobbies Manly Dig switches not installed
- and another set (4) of Panther Cougars

The Texas State Finals were on Saturday and we were leaving Friday afternoon to drive down. The mailman delivered the berg just after 12 noon that Friday. I am opened the box, installed my BR6000 RX, programmed my DX7, ran half a battery pack and that was pretty much it. I had to get everything else ready to leave within a few hours that day. I competed with the truck the next day at the TXRCRCA State Finals on what was going to only be my second time running the berg. I ended up with 7th out of 16 drivers in the open class and my son finished 9th. I figured that was a great start considering the circumstances.

The TXRCRCA State Finals were on June 13th and I really haven't run the berg much. I have been doing a lot of reading about them as well as selling off two scale 1.9 projects, a bunch of TLT parts and acquiring items I wanted to add to my berg. I started by adding the Punk RC Dig switch:

The Punk RC dig is fabulous by the way. I am still considering adding a second ESC though since I use a DX7 to control my crawlers. I have only run the Punk RC dig a couple times but it is majorly better than dig switches. I highly recommend the unit.

I am going to stay with 4.0 for now. I ran a 2.2 pimp cane a year ago so I am familiar with torsion, but I might build up a second berg later once this one is finished using the Zero T.

So currently my berg looks like this:

I tore it down today because I received my CDW 20* steering kit. I know there is much debate and most people do not clock the axles because it raises the center of gravity. Well just like my signature says: Give 20 people the same chassis & axles, and they'll build a crawler 20 different ways. So I clocked my axles. I picked up an awesome little tool from Trugg. This 20* clocking tool is solid metal. This bad boy is big and heavy. There is no stripping or wallowing out of this unit:

The CDW 20* steering is kit well thought out. Of course I can't leave well enough alone and I already modified mine slightly.

Here is the slight mod I made. CDW tells you to use a 3mm x 28mm long set screw to go through the bottom clamp and up into the delrin servo mount. I was not able to get the set screw to clamp down tight enough for me. So I went ahead and drilled out one side of the bottom clamp 3mm. I then used a dremmel to remove as little material as possible (in order to retain strength) but still allow a 3mm socket head allen bolt to tighten down through it. I had to shave the head of the allen bolt as well. The result is a very strong servo mount with no flex. The allen set screw would not do that.

Well I got a little more done on the front axle. I wanted to do the shock cap mod to the shocks as well change the shock oil. I do the cap mod to every crawler I own because I feel that the shocks are articulate smoother. I have no proof it actually works but it is just a personal preference. Anyways, the modified shock in on the left and it now has 10 weight oil. The shock length from eyelet to eyelet is 102mm now.

I pretty much have the front axle ready to bolt into the chassis now. I had to resolder a motor wire to clear the servo and dremel the drag link for clearance a little. I also had to make up a delrin steering link from the servo arm. So far so good though and I am excited to get this rig rebuilt.

Everything that screws into metal is now loctited and I have Axial stub axles installed now. The VP knuckles work perfect with the CDW steering kit. I made up a servo plate to not only clamp the servo in but also protect it from a hard fall.

Looks good Edie, you have continued w/ some of the updates(steering and Punk Dig) that I had planned to install had I kept the Berg, but now I'm just going to be a Bully!
