billj's first MOA build

Well i was looking at MR. VERTICAL's thread about making rims. So i thought i would give it a shot.
Started with these wheels i got in a trade, and really had no use for them



Cut the centers out and trimmed the back rings with the drill press



I had some 1/8" delrin to make the faces with


Made some spacers out of 1/4 delrin rod


Not super light, but im still waiting on the aluminum hardware. They weight about the same as my slw v4's. But at least i have some flat faced wheels. Now i can add a little more knuckle weight






Also while i was at the drill press i tried milling the motor side of my tranny case. Came out ok for a beat up old drill press and a dremel bit

How deep is the channel on those, you might be able to remove more material from the back side to shed a little more. Aluminum hardware will drop some grams too. Maybe drill some speed holes in those faces!

Thanks DT. The spacers are 1/2", the back beads are 1/4" wide. Total of 1" wide without the rings. I might also try some 3/32 lexan faces

You could easily take another 1/16" off those beads, unless that channel is really deep. Reducing each one by over 25% of it's current

Its just a standard Dremel bit #DRE115, and my old drill press Just gotta go little bits at a time

Thanks Martin. Well I had most of the stuff just lying around. All i ordered was the hubs and alum hardware. Im still not sure about the wheels they are about 0.3oz lighter (per wheel) than the slw's i had on there. I added 2-.100 rings. And there is still plenty of room on each side for more. My balance point is dead on the lower link screw. Im just not sure if i like the width (11 1/4 front) might change to 725,s in front too. Ill drive it this weekend at our state comp, and see how i like it

You are on the right track, bigger speed holes! Or smaller holes between the existing ones. Just keep removing material.

Kinda afraid to take too much material out Ill drive um like this for a little while, and see how it goes. Im also wondering if i need to put all 6 hub screws in?

So do a line of 3 small holes between the big ones, you still have a lot of removable meat there.

With delrin 3 should be fine. It likes to give a bit. Erik recommends 6 with his carbon faces do to the nature of carbon fiber. I see alot of guys still only putting 3 in. I'll get that brave when I have extra cash to replace a broken wheel face.

So i put on the milled motor case and some al locknuts. Still waiting to get some Ti screws Got her down to 5.35 lbs. (5lbs 5.6oz) If i throw on my shaved rovers i could lose an easy 2oz. But im really comfortable with my Sedonas, mmmm what to do?

Don't take this the wrong way, but you have always had a little shade tree in your custom DIY work (as have I), but you really ramped it up on the wheels. You might be leaving us other shade tree'ers behind on this one. Nice work.

Thanks Rick, the wheels came out nice. But all i did was follow MR. VERTICAL's thread on how to do it. I have enough 1/8" sheet to make 3 more sets. Im gonna try and get a little more creative with the next ones. Believe me, im still a "hack and slasher" when it comes to DIY stuff

Had a So Florida State Comp last sunday. Good news and bad news Good news is the wheels held up great. No problems at all Bad news is i forgot how to drive my crawler. One stupid mistake after another, made for a long day. I need to get out and practice alot more
