OK Rob, here are mill steps and one worthless shop dog that sleeps on the bench. Had to make a lathe jig for turning the wheel discs. I used a VP hub and bedlock to position all of the holes in the jig and discs. Made a jig to hold the beadlock in place as a drill template. Not pretty but worked very well. Sorry Nabil, these are not VP products so you can't use them on your new rig. However I'll have to test them for a couple of years to ensure they are ready for your Berg. I have about 20lbs of delrin tube/rod in my garage...time to make a serious mess. |

Nice work. How thick are the faces? My .063" 7075 ones seem to be withstanding a fair amount of abuse.

Exact same stuff. They will flex under hard loads and snap back...so my axles don't have to.

Got a little bit done today. It's remarkable how easily a miter saw will cut delrin. I thought it would be problematic...wrong. Mounted up the stock, bored it out with increasing centercutting endmills (1.5" max) then switched to the boring bar. Cut the OD with standard lathe tools and then cut them off. Repeat. I get two bead inserts per 3" stock. They came out a lot better than I thought they would and they easily hold a 2" OD knuckle. New knuckles will happen once my VP hub assortment arrives so I can get the new specs correct. The bead inserts are very tough yet light. I'm not sure what a complete 1" SLW weighs with 460 hubs/hardware but these will likely be ~45g each once I make the inner compression ring. The bead inserts could be be thinner and lighter but I like the insurance beef for the minimal weight increase. You should see the size of the delrin afro in my trash can!

Nice work. I have wanted to make a similar setup for some time but lack your motivation. Have you considered making an assortment of compression rings from different materials? Maybe from Delrin, aluminum, brass or steel. While a lot of work it would be a pretty trick way to adjust the weight and inertial of the wheel.

I think I'll stick with the knuckle weights for now. It would be cool though. I need to make a new set to go with my new homemade Egressor wheels. Proper design Christian. I made a new adapter for my beadlock compression jig too. I included a shot of the delrin afro in the trash. Tomorrow time permitting I'll get started on knuckle weights. Hopefully my VP package will arrive soon so I can drive her before the SoCal opener this coming weekend. This set are 0.9" wide instead of the 1.0" I've been running. I'll make a 1.0" set next in case I want to go back. I like the flexibility this design afford without having to make new wheel discs. It was a bunch of work but the next set will go a fab a lot quicker. Doing the back o the napkin calculations these will cut 5.3oz off of the rig placing it squarely below 5lbs RTR. It will likely take some getting used to and require some tuning (springs/oil).

They weigh less than an ounce each?
