The tires work well once broken in, they're rather hard before you break them in. My uncle cut and shut a set for 40 series and they come out to about 8 inches tall. He cut a lot out of the treads though, this I don't recommend. My stock tires with different foams work better than his.

If I were to build a set for myself:

Front
Exceed cases $2.50

60* universal shafts $90
Berg front gears with SDS 3rds, RC bro locker $45 plus gears... $30?
Dlux tubes $75
Dlux upper link mount $15

Front axle $297

Rear
Exceed gear box $2.50
DLUX shafts $90
DLUX tubes $75
plastic gears, RC bros locker $20
Dlux upper link mount $15

Rear axle $203

Total front and rear would be close to $500. You could also knock off $30 if you wanted to use the Exceed gears over the Berg gears in the front axle.

That would make these axles the lightest, cheapest (debatable) and possibly some of the strongest all for under $500.

I know you too well Randy so let me put some more food for thought in for you and lets see how cheap we can make them.

Everything seems cool. I think I'd go all plastic just to see what they would stand up to. A sub 4lb rig would probably be OK with plastic... except for the high HP motors everyone seems to be using these days.

And even then, good throttle restraint would probably go a long way.

Pretty crazy we can still molest kits like the good old days. My only fear is possible case flex. It may not be an issue, but I haven't seen a plastic housing yet that doesn't suffer from some case flex which usually always results in the gears taking a good hit. None the less, another option for those getting into the hobby!

I say the rear will work with the 2nd and 3rd as plastic, not the 4th. For the front, I am going to guess just the 2nd would work, not the 3rd and 4th.

Not sure. I dont want to hand make a ton of them so I will just have my CNC guy punch some out. Sometimes he is like lightning, sometimes like frozen molasses. The bright side is that they should be pretty cheap.

Yeah, I have been doing some research on these. I think its pretty crazy they have been out for close to 4yrs and nobody has made the connection. Just about every post I have read says they are just and useless.

IMO the case is over kill. I was even looking at it thinking after it proves itself that I would shave some material and see how much more can be lost. In the motor mount area its 6mm thick With the cases in half, I can flex it slightly, with them as whole cases, I cannot flex the case at all.

How much of a loss of strength is there? If it were a 3.5mm vs. 3.5mm gear I am not sure they would be worth testing at all. With a 6mm wide gear.... who knows.

Oh, also, if youre planning on running the plastic gears, you will need to run the MT small gears. If you run Berg gears youre still only going to get 3.5mm worth of engagement. By the pics on the MT website, it looks like those small gears are only good for 3.5mm also but I can only assume they are really good for 6mm?
