Hi

Having built mainly scale crawlers in the past, I kinda was a little tired of focusing mostly on the looks of a crawler instead of its performance.

Aquiring a tuned Axial Wraith recently, I somewhat got the liking for a crawler with better performance than a scaler.

And because I like the way those Superclass crawlers look, I decided I want one.

Of course, there are no kits or such available and you normally need to be good at machining your own parts, so I was in a little dilema. Where to get what I want...?

Fortunatelly we have a few Superclass Comp drivers here in Europe and since they are constantly improving their cars, I was able to get a bunch of used parts for reasonable prices from them (It is maybe important to mention that I have no intention to drive at comps, I simply wanted to have one to drive for my own pleasure. Therefore, my budget for this project is somewhat limited...).

From all the parts I got, I managed to put together a rolling chassis:

It consits of a featherweight carbon chassis, professionally crafted by one of Europe's best drivers. Good for me, he abandond the chassis for another one, so I could have it... :ror:
The axles are Super Bully XLDs 65:1, since I didn't want to go too wide.
Wheels are Losi Bossclaws on Highfly aluminum rims.

I also got another set of wheels:

These are Rovers on HPI Blast rims.

As you can see, there are still a lot of parts missing, so it'll take a while till this rig will finally have its first test-drive.
I've ordered some 5 and 6mm titanium rod for the steering rods and maybe use 6mm rods to replace the lower POM links. The upper links are already titanium ones.
I'm also not sure if I'll keep the shocks, but for the beginning, they should be O.K.

To be continued... :ror:

Hey all! Late last year I decided to build my first Super class crawler, so I began collecting parts as i could afford them, beginning with the axles (38.5:1 Superbullies at $99 each, who could say no?) then I found some cheap 40-Series Proline wheels that I could practice on narrowing, soon followed by 1/5 scale servos, some Hobbyking goodies to experiment with, and a rather expensive order to Holmes Hobbies for a pair of BR-XLs and a matched pair of Pro Custom 540s...! Gotta have the good stuff!

I just recently sold my old house, so I had a pretty decent budget at my disposal (and no garage ), but I wasn't gonna go too crazy... I shopped around a lot on the good ol' Bay and RC4WD's site for good deals on major parts, so far the overall cost is... moderate :ror: I knew I had to build my own chassis, but had no clue what i really wanted it to look like... Did a lot of reading and research, which helped a lot and gave me some cool ideas on how to go about it...

BTW it's already up and running, this is a post-production build thread... "thumbsup" Hope ya all like pictures! Got lots of em! :)

Both steer axles with 1/5 Scale servo mounts and linkage

Compared to the Creeper

In the beginning... I made a jig during early winter one evening, got it to where it was workable at 18 3/4 inches, then popped a pair of Novak 55s on for mockup purposes. I stared at that jig off and on for a long time before I acquired all my major parts bits and actually put pen to paper (or in this case cardboard, which proved to be invaluable during the design process) to get this project rolling!

Iphone sketch of one design

Began the chassis skid with a 5/8" fat slab of Delrin i got off Ebay.. I wasn't sure what thickness i needed for the TVP design i had in mind, but i thought it best to make it narrow and long... 2" wide was enough to get the BR-XLs on top between the plates so since I had two full sheets of this goodness, I went with 2" wide by 6" overall... I got to break in my new (to me) Dremel scroll saw, which worked like a hot damn! And what worked even better was the belt/disk sander i bought at the same time as the saw... Super easy peasy i tell ya!

I masked off the edge i wanted to save before hacksawing a 1/2" x 1/16" notch in the side for the bottom edge of the TVPs

Cardboard was so very handy to make mockups with, and this was an early prototype... It was scrapped due to lack of room for all my elecs and future add ons...

My bro Bighitbomber convinced me of a design based loosely on my micro-crawler, so after hours of sketching, erasing, resketching, cutting and trimming, this is what i ended up with... I thought it would be cool to add a third dimension with the fenders, which turned out to be a very good thing later...

I masked off the 2.5mm CF sheets and layed it all out, with minor changes to make cutting it easier (with both sheets screwed together I went through two hacksaw blades cutting out this chassis, it's quite abrasive and very hard on tools... It took me 10 hours to finish it from masking to unmasking!)

Link and shock mounts plotted and drilled three drill bits later...

I love this picture... A lot of effort but it was a rewarding Sunday!

When I knew exactly how long the base of the TVPs were i notched and marked the edge of the Delrin then cut and sanded it to length

I contoured the leading and trailing ends with the belt sander, you can see the TVP relief notch on both sides

Drilled the Delrin for the bottom screws but there was no need to tap them, screws cut their own threads and are very snug

Loosely mocked up the fenders... Starting to look like something!

Roof, hood and fender tops will have to wait till later... Some nice thin aluminum will look cool i think... I'm not really worried about weight, it's not gonna be a comp rig...
