Default My new money pit....

I was just looking over the forum when I noticted this thread and thought,
what the heck is this FOFF thing anyway?

It was love at first sight!

So I figured I would give it a shot at building one,
but because I am such a ***** when it comes to switching to LiPo
batteries, it posed a few issues on how to incorporate my NiMh
batts into a usable platform.

This is what I came up with to deal with my fears,
and still be able to use the new batts I have on hand.....................

> CC SV2/4600kv
> CC BEC (direct to servo)
> Hitec HS645MG
> RC4WD XR4 TX/RX
> RR trany gears
> MIP drive shafts
> Onyx 5000mah 7 cell NiMh batts
> RC4WD shocks
> a crap-load of Axial spacers/links/threaded posts to get 13 inch WB
> Panther paddles, Cobras, and PL Dirt Hawgs II
plus PL Road Rage tires for street testing/tuning
all on their own Axial 8 whore rims ($$$)

I am still in the final stages of building this thing,
so I would like any advice I can get before I run it
and dynimite something.

It is my first BL motor/system, and I understand 32p gears
are a good idea, but the money ran out so I am going to start
with 87/22 48p gears and try to set the throttle curve
to keep things from exploding.

Running these heavy NiMh batts means I have to
over-engineer my sub-assemblies,
but untill I win that BWD Whiplash FOFF chassis raffle, (LOLZ???)
this was what I came up with.

And yes, its a bit heavy, but I used .06 styrene
to keep the weight down, and its as solid as a molded 1 piece
sub-frame from any kit because I backed seams with oversized
square stock instead of just angle pieces, using Ambroid pro weld.

Let me know what you think,
and please toss any help/ideas my way.

I dont know whats going on, but photobucket wont let me
copy and paste the IMG files into this sites "manage files" screen
(im betting its the windows auto update screwing me again on an HP system. WHAT A JOKE! - could use help there too)

so I will just try and link the album.... you have to start with the last pic first

Nice work on the styrene man

What about 8 cell's?
and just wondering, why no lipo?
To me, the initial investment has been well worth it... they open up a whole new level of rc performance.

Yeah I was terrified of lipos.
Now that I have them and just be a little more careful with them its all good.
I love them.

You have a very cool foff rig. Every thing looks great. I can't find a max discharge on your batteries. I have pitched nimh. Do research on lipos. They got a rough start but now they have very little problems. One of the reasons that we have seen such a huge performance increase in our electric rc rigs is lipos.

I have never had a fire or over heat with a lipo. Learn about lipos and don't push beyond there max.

Formula for max discharge ((c value) * mAh)/1000 = max discharge

example: 25 * 2200/ 1000 = 55 max amps

If you push this battery i am sure it would light on fire. Just educate your self.

Good Luck

Evan

Well I finally got it where I can call it finished.

Ill try and upload the final pics from PB,
but I dont know why it would not work before yet.
If it wont take, the pics will be in the same link as my first post.

Turn'Nburn, thanks a million for the pic hookup last time!

I should say about the LiPo's that its not the charging and
stuff that im worried about, but more that I will end up getting
defective batts and have the seller tell me its my fault that
they are not working and refusing to help correct things.

I have read more than enough posts about issues like
that to make me hold off on the switch untill my
NiMh batts die off, even about "reputable" sellers.

But this rig sure would benefit from the weight reduction
the LiPo's would give me, and would mount up right on
the batt tray I built.

This BL system is no way near as fast as I thought it
would be either, at least with the gearing I am using.
But its better than the 19t I used for testing,
and gives me a better approach speed.

I am hopeing to get it out for its first run today,
but its been raining, and since there are no sand or dirt
hills around here, I sort of have to wait until after 5pm,
when all the construction crews quit for the day
so I can sneak over to the sites they are working on
and hit their piles....

(OK, I cant get the pics to load up no matter what I do,
but their in the album from the first post....)

Well I got her out, and it did WAY better than I expected
from the bare-assed street tests out in front of my house.

But a few things ended up confusing me,
like if I let go of the throttle to save it,
I had no more power untill I let it roll back down the hill.

If I tried to throttle back up half way down, (rolling in reverse)
there was nothing to be had to save the run up.?

And reverse takes a second or two to kick in anyway from a dead flat???,
so leaping over the edge and using it to stay level dont work
like in everybody elses videos.....

I will screen capture my LINK profiles and put them
in the album, since I cant just add them to my posts
for some reason.

But its 2am here, and I need to rest.

I hope somebody can look over my CC/Link profiles
and with any luck just say what a dummy I am, and switch this to that.

Anyway, I put/built in a QuickLink cable, but need to dust her off
just the same when I come back for help tomorrow with
the sceen caps.........

Peace

Im still playing around trying to figure out why my motor is cutting out on me, but I read something about running a common ground from the BEC to the RX with a direct to servo wired layout. Need to try that out.

I had it out for a run today and got a few vids.
My camera sucks, but it should be good for a laugh.

Might want to turn the sound down if any young or sensitive folks are around, I didnt realize the music I got from AOL free mp3 downloads
was so naughty..... but its funny and almost matches the action.
