Well a lot of cursing this fine day, and some scrap pieces of bent metal, but got upper links made. they are 6mm aluminium tube with 4mm allthread through. They had to be bent to clear the driveshafts. NOT easy. Now to find a way to mount the rear shocks to the chassis. I'm thinking of a plate coming back off the loop at the rear using the old upper shock mounts and a couple of other holes there. It's that or 100mm shocks or extend the shocks I have by 10mm. |

Thanks. I sorted the rear shocks out the simple way by cutting the top mount off the cap, drilling the cap and putting a button head screw through, then a rod end onto the screw. That saved a lot of time over making a bracket. Bit too low i guess, but I have plenty of adjustment available. Next is make up braces across the chassis and figure out where the esc will go. Oh and make a proper skid plate I have thought of extending the skid plate back a bit, not sure how much, but I could do with more room to fit the esc as it's damn big Last edited by M1tch; 10-18-2012 at 01:02 PM. |

Thanks. A little more work done today. a proper skid plate from delrin, although it needs trimming. I used the old chopping board skid as a top plate to fix to the transmission, and then screwed through the sides of the chassis to tie it all together. Much stiffer, but I have no more delrin to make a top plate, so will have to order some. thats stuff is hard to get in the UK, but i always keep an eye out on ebay for cut offs.

Well not much done today. Went out in the sunshine for a good while. got servo mount made. I used the stock wraith links as i will make up something else later, also considering a chassis mounted servo. |

Well back at work now, so less time for the important stuff! Made up an upper plate and cut out holes to access pinion and front driveshaft. Its screwd from the sides as well as the transmission, so stiffens the chassis up a load. |

Oh I brought the bottom of the shock in to clear the tire, still haven't done the top yet lol. Good news I just got hold of an ezrun SC8 esc which is a lot smaller than the hpi rage I was going to use. Also it's 120 amp against 80. Due to work I won't be able to get anywhere for a couple of weeks, so have good time to finish off. |

It's all looking good, what's your wheel base at on this thing? Oh and I would raise it up just a tad so the skid and lower links are level. |

Wheelbase is 13.5". I have plenty of adjustment on the shock mounts so will raise it by putting the bottom shock mounts on the upper set of holes. I just have to alter the layout a little to get the battery in. I'm using 2200mah 4s, or I could use 3s if thats too nuts. This isn't as simple a build as I thought it would be, but it's coming along fine, just taking longer than I thought it would. |

Let us know how the holy skid works out. It looks as if it would create some drag. Just my 2 cents.

| Re: Version 2. Actually thats the top plate!! working all weekend has slowed things down, but I'm getting there. At the moment making up a battery holder and figuring out whether I can get the esc down on the skid as well.

well a crappy excuse really, but other things seem to be holding me up on this. I've got it near finished, but had to remake the skid plate after measuring things wrong. Not got any delrin so am using other stuff temporarily. battery box is made and also esc mounted. still a prototype really. I will get some photos soon, but the weather has been so bad around here with heavy rain and floods it almost impossible to get anywhere.

Came home yesterday to find a leaky garage roof. Lucky most stuff is not damaged, but no chance of getting it sorted now for a few days because of Christmas. Still a lot of people have had homes flooded. That and I have flu.. xmas is sucking atm the pic is distorted because i took it with my phone camera. there is a roof and the white piece on the front is to be replaced with black delrin. Evrrything including the receiver will be on the skid plate. |

Well flu over Christmas, and wet, cold weather have slowed me up. Also bought a small milling machine and have been playing around with that. I have some more delrin coming sometime to make a new skid. Made up a front grill on the mill (2nd attempt, but am still learning). I expect i will have to do another. i think I have some fake headlight lenses somewhere, but can't find them atm. |

This one. There is a local store where they sell tools and stuff called Machine Mart. They are a national chain. Occasionally they have a vat free day, so 20% off. There are similar ones around, just different brand names, but no cheaper. Pays to buy local in case of problems. Clarke CMD300 Milling Drilling Machine - Machine Mart I have been thinking of getting one for some time now. Just the right size for what I do. Quicker and more accurate than all the hand work I have done. I have a wood router, and the bits are just as effective (and cheaper lol) as milling bits for cutting delrin, obviously not metal. Back to the build. I am waiting on some 8mm delrin to make a skid plate to replacing the prototype chopping board one as I'm happy with the layout. I will lower the battery box and also there will be a cut out below the motor to slot a piece of 3mm abs plastic in to protect the motor. Also I think the front shock upper shock mounts will need bracing. They flex an awful lot just compressing the suspension by hand. The rear shock mounts have a brace running between them, just need to tidy it up a bit. I gave it a run around a football pitch a while ago. It ran ok, but need to sort out a few things. I also have built another rear axle with overdrive gearing to match the front for when I'm not on steep stuff. All STRC stuff as the other axles, and I got their steering links for up front to replace the flexy stock crap. Last edited by M1tch; 01-18-2013 at 09:20 PM. |
