Default Shane's GMade R1 Rock Buggy Build

Just finished up the Gmade R1. Here is the roller. Still have some work to do.
You'll have to read through my thread to find some good/bads about this kit.
Took about 5 hours to build a roller, only stopping for food and bathroom breaks.

First thing I noticed was the quality parts. Nothing skinny, thin or weak. Only thing different is the phillips head screws. Everything went together perfectly without trimming or hammering on something.
They give you options in a few places. Different shock pistions, droop or sprung shock setup, two top shock frame positions. And at least one extra piece of hardware. I have pile of screws, orings, washers, etc left over. That is big positive, especially using the screw head hardware.
Full set of bearings come with the kit too.

The suspension links are mega beef, steering links are beef. The axle cases are strong, the axle gears are ok. Transmission is solid, gears are a decent plastic. Driveshafts are as good as any plastic driveshafts i have seen. Use the "pin through" attaching hardware. Remind me of T-maxx shafts. Beadlock wheels seem solid but the beadlock rings should hold up. The two electronic plates are nice. I painted the metal diff covers black.

Wheel base is at 12.25" now and right at 11" wide outside of 2.2 rockcrushers. It weighs 3lbs 15oz as it sits right now. I went with the droop setup option. Steering is around 30 degree out of the box (my guess).

The big horn tires could have been left out. They are 3x thicker than any 2.2 tire i have felt. The foams are 2" wide by like 12" long foam strips. Not doughnuts. If the tires were not rigid, the foam density might be ok but it's still a strip of foam!

I have already ordered ripper7777777's skid, links, front/rear 4 links.
Putting in a Tekin Fx-R, fastest brushed motor in the parts bin and 11.1v lipo. I will put in different electronics as I go.

Ok, pictures. There are other R1 builds out there, so I skipped alot of the step by step build up pics.

No shock oil for now with the droop setup. Just used it for assembly and put a few drops in the shock bodies.

Yep, they look mean. Is it worth $280? Yes, right now it is because of the quality parts and they didn't make shortcuts. The manual is really drawn out too. We'll just have to see once it see's some rocks and my heavy throttle finger.
I think the 2.2 rock crushers are a good fit. I went with droop for the taller tire size, keep it low, and somewhat more scale.

Well it's $280 with no extras or shipping, if you want it with everything (and I would) it would range in the $500.....

Yeah. I just bought the kit. It was $42 for shipping! I am impatient. I have all the electronics already, so no new cost there. I have to sell stuff to buy stuff or it can get out of hand.

I was saying the same thing when I was assembling it. Top notch parts/quality. They even recess areas for nuts to drop into and hold, so no fiddling with needle nose pilers in some tight areas.
The ground clearance will be nice, esp on the 2.2 crushers.

Sorry for some of the crappy pictures.

Larger endbell 540 motors will not fit without some grinding, so I just put in a old integy 35T for now on 12t pinion.
There is a second set of holes in the skid to move the trans back but the trans hits part of the chassis when you try to mount it up. If you could get the trans to those second set of holes (with some grinding) you might could get a Cobalt Puller in there. Not sure. I will be swapping to ripper7777777 skid anyways, asap.

Put the motor on the transmission before attaching it to the frame! Can't really do a motor swap with ease, unless you pull the skid.

I had some left over UpGrade R/C skull sheets so slapped them on there and filled in the rest with other stickers. Painted the panels white on the inside.
What do ya think? I haven't decided if I like it yet or not.
The body panels are kind of a pain to get on. 7 screws/nuts per side and one or two on each panel are tough to get too.

Did some testing on the rock pile right quick. Torque twist is noticeable. It runs really quiet and the axles sound nice and smooth too. I don't have any weights on the wheels now. The front end would settle better if i did. Weighs 5lb 1oz RTR right now.

I still have to get a better motor/esc combo in there. I will be wanting some speed. You could probably swap to an Axial transmission and get dig on this rig. I might do that in the future.

Thanks! I have done another body like it before. Used the leftovers from this body. I am not good with painting beyond one color.

Not my idea but, I used small zip ties on my panels. looks cool and is a heck of a lot easier than the srews and nut that some of ( the lower ones) are a total pain to get on.

Thanks guys.

I got to drive this a little bit at Disney at the DoubleDown comp today.

Couple things.
I put cone washers on the top mounts of the shocks to limit the slop. O-rings work but cone washers look cleaner.
Top link screws come loose alot. The ones that attach to the frame on the inside. That will get fixed. Screws that hold the chassis together come loose alot. It didn't loctite but should have. I was in a rush to get the kit together.
Droop setup works great for bashing. The truck is a bit tipsy but only on high speed quick turns. The 11" width helps alot too. It jumps through the air flat and lands flat. After running around and flipping, small jumps, erratic throttle (need to tone down the Fx-R drag brake), I was surprised I didn't break anything.

I am just running 11.1v on 35T with 12t pinion now. Decent speed but not enough for me. I will be getting some more speed in the future. Also, the ripper7777777 upgrades will be nice too.
