Narrow R1's I am not waiting for Gmade to make a set of narrow scale'ish axles, the plan is to narrow a set of R1 axles to fit under my cherokee:shock: I have one of the housings cut. I used 10mm stainless steel to sleeve the axle tubes. I am going to fab up some sort of bracket to re-join the tubes. here is where I am as of tonight. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n5.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n6.jpg I am also toying with the idea of clocking the pumkins, we will see how hard the brackets are to make. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n8.jpg Here is the difference in width, I cut out a total of 28mm, 17mm on one side and 11mm from the other side. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...w%20R1/n11.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...w%20R1/n10.jpg All, well most comments welcome:flipoff: |
Hey mate well done with that axle narrowing...looks great. Have you cut the shafts already? Yours must be the 1st attempt i've seen with the R1 axles. Keep it up and keep us updated "thumbsup" |
No I have not cut the shafts yet. that is the next step, when I get time. |

Those look just as good narrowed up. Good work. I have had great results using 30 sec or 5 min setup 2 part epoxy to hold parts together. The stuff that comes in a syringe at the auto parts store or wally world. |

You could also drill and tap the stainless inserts, and then use screws to hold it in conjunction with JB Weld or an epoxy. I would do top and bottom, it looks like you would have enough room to do it. Then you could for sure clock the pumpkin."thumbsup" I really like these axles, after doing Eric's FJ chassis. I'm going to pick my self up a set. And looks like they're pretty easy to narrow as well. |
Thanks, I think I will try the set screw idea, I finished one short side inner, have to get more cut off wheels for the dremel tomorrow:sad: and now for the flash:ror: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...20R1/nr123.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...20R1/nr122.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...20R1/nr121.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...20R1/nr120.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...20R1/nr119.jpg |
^^I think it will work good.^^ Like how these are turning out!"thumbsup" |
hell yeah, that looks awesome, good jod."thumbsup" |
Thanks for the welcome comments, today I finished the long side inners, drilled and tapped the axle tubes, and as usual on the last screw hole broke the tap off in the housing, after a lot of unkind word and calming down I carefully drilled out the tap. One down, one to go, and I am out of grease,on to the pics. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1001.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1002.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1003.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1005.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1007.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1008.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1009.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1010.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1013.jpg |
WOW! Great job! Screws worked good, looks like."thumbsup" Well accept for breaking off a tap. How close of tolerance was the sleeves to the ID of the housing? I'm going to pick up a set now for sure."thumbsup" Got an idea now!;-) |

Man I just sold a set. I must have another set now I too have an idea! |
Looks great "thumbsup", another idea for the R1 axles. They are great axles but just too big for most project. I like the way you put this together. 'Mog build, maybe? |
