| Dravpnir tries to build something all weather fun
I have had a pair of R1 axles for a while now, but got so disappointed in the steering that they have just laid in my parts bin almost since I bought them. I plan to have these one completely waterproof and I do not care that much how it will preform or if it fulfills the rules for some special class, it is more of a fun project. I try to use as much as I can from my parts bin, so there will be quite a lot of axial parts that are leftovers from my sporty that I am building. Front axle got home made spline adapters, axial universals, some chinese brand Wraith c-ubs, VP wraith knuckles and Hulksta carbon fibre steering arms. The servo mount will be replaced by a carbon fibre one and I am planing on making a box or something similar to have the battery mounted on the front axle. The rear axle is a stock R1 rear axle. The transmission will be a Axial AX10 with Robinson candy inside and RCP Crawlers Titanium shafts. The motor plate is a CF one from NCD. The drive shafts will be Axial wild boars. The motor is a old HH 454 Cobalt Puller. I got a couple of them so I will try to see if they work. The chassis will be a stock R1 chassis. The skid plate was missing when I bought it and I haven't decided if I am gonna make one myself of buy the R1 delrin skid plate. I will probably order some of those R1 lights anyway. I got some 0.4 mm titanium plates at home that I am thinking of using for panels, but not sure yet. Perhaps I will just go with painted stock panels. Almost done I have ordered a set of Mickey Thompson "Baja Claw TTC" 2.2 tires, 93 mm Gmade piggy back shocks, waterproof sanwa receiver and servo. Thinking about using a Sidewinder V3 as esc. Also need to purchase some more 4 mm diameter titanium to make links and a set of wheels. Last edited by Dravpnir; 03-15-2014 at 06:15 PM. |

| Re: Dravpnir tries to build something all weather fun Thanks Time for some new pictures. I was surfing around for some parts and got intrigued by the Vattera Twin Hammers Trailing arms for the rear axle. So, I ordered a set and they are a keeper My plan was to use some Gmade Piggy back shocks so I bought some from Rcmart on ebay but got told after a while that they were unavailable... so I will stick to the SCX10 shocks I got at home. I think the TH trailing arms looks really promising. With the SCX10 shocks I get horisontal lower links at full extension. Keeping a wheel base at 12.5" it looks like this. If I can make the skid plate quite thin then I can have straight drive shafts at ride height I got a bit worried about the ground clearance if I was going to use horisontal lower links, but when I took out the wheels my worries disappeared |

| Re: Dravpnir tries to build something all weather fun I will do my best And talking about updates... The electronics has arrived! Same with the tires. I have put them on some old wheels. I would like to get some new wheels that are more narrow, but think I will start with these and save up some cash to get some nice wheels. Didnt find any 4 mm titanium at home so I had to go with 6 mm. I guess they will last a very long time With those and some m3 threaded roll to mock up some upper links I got this. Throw on the wheels and I have a roller. I have just over 60 mm under the skid (or atleast where it will be when I have made it...) and axles |

I am still thinking about the bracers. There will be some, but I dont know how I want to make them, or just go the easy way and buy them. Regarding panels, I am kinda leaing towards ones out of 0.4 mm titanium without any art work. I think the raw titanium color would be a nice together with all the black and silver from the chassis. Can anyone recommend some beadlock wheels that are max 1" wide and look atleast bit scale-ish and do not cost a fortune? Last edited by Dravpnir; 03-24-2014 at 03:10 AM. | |

Got home an order from JunFac the other day, so one more step done to make it drivable Time is limited atm for me so I took the easy way and bought the original delrin skid plate and the shock bracers. But got an itch to make is 4WS too... but first I want to make it RTR... I think... The lights one the roof is really bad for roll over capability but they look too cool not to use |

| Re: Dravpnir tries to build something all weather fun Same here I actually mostly bought them becuase they was cheap, beadlocks and in the right size... but when they arrived I got really surprised how good they looked. I have also pimped them up with some silver scale hardware and red caps from Gmade. |

Looks Good, the links being parallel to each other and the ground should make the rig handle nicely. Do the portal axles have gear reduction? |

Love what you've done with the steering on the front axle, I had a set of r1 axles and the turning circle was very disappointing, and have recently been thinking about trying an xr10 conversion on some, now we know it can be done, to the previous poster yes they do huve reduction in the hubs.

I am really enjoying watching this come together. Post up some more detailed pix of the behind-the-axle steering setup! I want to see how the tie rod clears the lower links and drive shaft!

Any chance you'll be making more of those spline adapters? May be interested in a set if that happens! |

| Re: Dravpnir tries to build something all weather fun The wheels are Mickey Thompson MT-28 Internal Beadlock Stamped Metal wheels from RC4WD. They are made from steel so they are quite heavy, but for $55 for a set and that I am not going to comp with this one I do not care Quote:
