Just ordered most of the rest of the parts for the build. SCX10 tranny with RRP internals, Wraith axles with Vanquish Stage 1, ROC412 3100, MMP waterproofed, Castle BEC, GMade piggybacks, and a few other things. Major props to Ikaika from the Crawl Space for helping me make selections. Once those arrive, all that will be left is figuring out measurements for the upper links and driveshafts and then ordering those. Stay tuned...

Well...got some parts in this week, so I've made some progress. Using a combination of leftover Wraith, SCX10 and XR10 links and various length rod ends, I think I'm close to where I'd like to be with the geometry. I absolutely love the look of the GMade piggybacks, and the adjustable dampening is very cool. Let me know what you think so far...

Next up will be putting together the axles, mocking up the tranny with drive shafts, and figuring out where I'm going to put all of the electronics. Cheers!

This is coming along nicely. AR60s are a great choice.

More progress. Resolved so far:
- Wraith axles with VP stage 1 (c-hubs, knuckles, lockouts)
- GMade piggybacks
- SCX10 tranny
- ROC 412 3100 KV
- MMP
- Hitec 7950 waterproofed
- MIP SCX10 driveshaft for the front
- Gmade light buckets (2 headlights, 3 roof-mounted lights)
- Grab-bag mix of links (XR10 uppers for the rear lower, leftover G6 and Wraith aluminum links with spacers and rod end sizes to get proper alignment)

The wheelbase currently sits at approx. 13", and articulation is good.

Still TBD:
- Rear driveshaft is too long for MIP Wraith in standard configuration with 1 long and 1 short drive hub. It might work using the long drive hubs on both ends. If not, I'll try either the next longest MIP shaft kit or the 120-155mm Junfac hardened shaft.
- Battery size/configuration/placement (still thinking 3s saddle packs but maybe with 1/2 at front of body and 1/2 at rear of body).
- Wheels & tires (I'll probably start out with Ripsaws from my Wraith kit on Rocksters)

Hoping to have this running by the weekend. More updates to follow, but here are some pix in the meantime...

If ya flip those rear lower links around you'll get more clearance...

Believe it or not, so far, everything clears. I had to rotate the lower rears inward a bit to make it happen, but I've tested the suspension at full rotation both ways and full compression. The MIP shaft also clears (although I'm going to put in a narrower Junfac to get more length). I'll post more pix in the next day or so.

Just got the Junfac 120-155mm shaft and looks like it will be a perfect fit in the rear. Everything seems to clear so far. Should be a fun night of building tonight.

Following this with interest, I have a set of wraith axles and an scx10 trans as well as enough links, shocks etc to do this, atm all I need is the cage and wheels/tyres.

I was talking about clearance while crawling. The bend in them will let you get up over rocks easier if they were flipped around.

It's alive!!! I was able to get everything up and running last night and took a couple of short test runs. Some things are working well and some things still need work. Here's a partial update with more to follow:

1. I had to notch out the rear battery tray to make room for the SCX10 tranny spur gear cover. 1st pic is what I started with and 2nd pic is how I ended up.

2. The Junfac 120-155mm hardened steel axle seems to be doing fine in the rear. To my surprise, I broke the end hub of the MIP SCX10 drive shaft in front on my first 10-min test run (running ROC412 3100 KV, MMP, 20t/80t pinion spur on 2S for now). I replaced that half of the drive shaft with a spare and went on a slightly longer test run without breaking it again, but I'm wondering if the angle from tranny to axle pinion might be a bit too much. In any event, the SCX10 axle is a bit on the short side even for the front (which has shorter links), so I'm thinking that I'm going to go with another Junfac 120-155mm shaft in the front and then keep a third as a spare. Still TBD...

3. Once I had the drivetrain installed and chassis put together, I just shoved the electronics and saddle packs in wherever. Placement is obviously going to need a lot of work. There really isn't much room at all, so I'm giving thought to widening the chassis by a few mm by adding spacers to either side of each strut and mounting point.

4. Based on VERY preliminary test runs, I'm very pleased with the suspension setup. Articulation is very good (sorry I haven't gotten a flex shot yet), there is virtually no slop in the link setup, and the handling was also very good on the test runs in the driveway and front yard (maybe better than I expected). More on this to follow.

I'm going to hold off on the decision about 2s vs 3s until I get the RRP slipper clutch (88t spur) installed and do a few more test runs. At that point, I'll work on electronics placement, make a decision on chassis widening, and then choose my battery option.

After that, it will be time to add lights and give it a body.

All in all, pleased with the progress and looking forward to massaging this beautiful little beast some more. Thanks to those that have been reading and providing input.

It's now had about 30-40 minutes total run time. 1/2 by me and 1/2 by our almost 5-year-old. Andy ran it around on rocks for a solid 20 mins straight, and it held up very well. So far, I really like the handling and the turning radius. The combination of low center of gravity, light weight, weighted front wheels, Wraith axles/knuckles, OD front/UD rear seems to be working very well. What I don't like at the moment is something causing the steering to be very twitchy at speed (esp. when trying to drive in a straight line). I'll need to work on that.

Default R1 Frankenstein new project

Thought I'd post a quick update. Finally got around to putting some panels and light buckets on, so it's starting to look the part. Took it on a 3-hour run a few weeks ago, and it's just a beast. The combination of low CG, long WB, good ground clearance, and insane amounts of steering make it probably my most capable rig.

Currently running a ROC 412 3100 kV with MMP and CC BEC on 2s with OD front and stock rear gearing. Hitec 7980. Switched to Rock Beast XORs. Gmade 103mm piggybacks. Plan to try 3s next time out just for giggles. Here are some pix:

Thx for taking the time to share your build & the parts you used.

Nice to see the ROC12 fits, possibly my next R1 mod.

Happy to share and glad you like. It was a lot of fun to build, and it's a blast to run. In many ways, it's a better Wraith than my Wraith.

It's been a while since the last update on this one. It actually sat on the shelf for a while until I recently rediscovered it, and I've been having a blast with it. I replaced the ROC 412/MMP combo with an HH Puller Pro Stubby 3300 and BLE Pro. What a fantastic combination. The combination of power and control is absolutely incredible. I also added some ARB diff covers for a bit more bling.

Here's a short video from my last outing:

Nice Rig, i have an R1 too, and i must say,the Rig is awesome on the rocks. But i prefer to crawl very smooth and had not a so powerful drivetrain in mine.

Thanks! It's definitely fun to run. I'm with you on smooth crawling on most of my rigs. But this one bounces so well it's just hard to keep a light touch on the throttle, lol.

Inspired by this thread, I've ordered an R1 cage. I've got either a Honcho and a Wroncho that'll be used as a parts donor for running gear and I will fab all the links as well as the skids.

Thanks for the thread.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad to hear this was helpful to you. This continues to be my favorite 2.2 to drive. I look forward to seeing how yours turns out.

Is m3 the common bolt to hold these together? An m2 or m2.5 for the body panels? I've got some of all, but not as many smaller ones.
