This should not affect bearing life much if at all. That is you won't notice any bearing life difference. |

Great job on the mods and thank you for posting the methodology. Can this mod be done if you have rear steer?

I thought about it before the rear steer, now I really don't need it, these tires and the motor combo get me through anything so far HANG UP AND DRIVE ! |

I also have rear steer and was wondering if this mod would help the crawling ability when you are not turning. You are running the Proline Interco TSL SX Super Swamper XL 2.2"?

Looking forward to trying this mod out on a new R1 I just picked up last week (there are a few folks out there like this guy still interested in the R1 platform I guess)

Just followed this thread and swapped gear sets around among my Sawbacks and R1 axle'd Wraith Wraith + R1 Axles Great idea and write up! I will add that I used the R1 ring gear ilo the Sawback one. I thought the Sawback gear was too narrow and I was a bit concerned with how little axle was in the locker. I just ground down one side until the gears meshed up, then shimmed from there. Got much more axle engagement. Can't wait to try it out! |

| Re: Underdrive for the R1... Finally With a lot of work, the R1 is a pretty capable rig. And that is what I like about it. Working on it is half the fun.

Just assembled my R1. It immediately did the steering mod and have machined the knuckles to increase steering 15% easy. I had to bow the stock steering link as well since the link was immediately hitting on the dif cover. Slight bend and some adjustments to rod ends to open steering back up a bit. I have ordered the sawback ring and pinion and going to mod the rear dif next. I did notice that there are other clearance issues. I temporarily put wideners on the front to resolve. electronics after the rear dif mod. Looking forward to first run....I also agree that working on these rigs is 1/2 the fun. Thanks for ALL the links and tips.

Just did this mod based on your tutorial. Wow! It works beautifully and the change in the car is borderline stunning. Anyone who wants more technical crawling performance from an R1 NEEDS this mod.
