| Poor Man's HD locker
So in an attempt to reduce slop in the drivetrain, I took apart my portals and was going to implement supermoturd's tinfoil fix to fill in the gaps on the outer portal gears and I noticed that there was an opportunity to mod the center ring gear/hub to lock into the axles. Tools needed, Tools to disassemble the axle to get to the center gears 3/32 drill bit Hand drill or drill press center punch 3mm tap 3mm grub screws So here goes the steps; Took out the ring gear; The idea here was to drill and tap a hole perpendicular to the flat portion of the "D". I had a few 3mm grub screws lying around which was perfect for the job. So I measured in 3mm from the edge and made my mark with a prick punch, making sure it was exactly center with the "D". You can just see the line on the hub in the photo From there, I put the gear into a vise and prepped it up for drill and tap. I used a 3/32 drill and a 3mm tap. Here is one side done, now on to the next, basically repeating the steps above. Once both ends are tapped, put in your 3mm grubs and it should look like this note that my gear the "D" were not in line so that's why you only see one in the picture. Here it is in the axle; Before you tighten these grubs screws, make sure the axle is assembled with the C hub or axle adaptor installed. This will ensure you have proper axle engagement with the portal gears and outer bearings. Once it's all in, tighten the grub screws with locktite (do not over tighten as the metal is pretty soft and you don't want to strip it. let the locktite do its job here) and reinstall the cover... and you're good to go. It locks the output shaft to the center hub. This remove any slop/play between the two. It's the same idea as the VP locker for the axial axles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGWIzHNlDuk |

Love the idea. I just might try this. A thought... would it not be smarter to drill on the opposite side? So it pushes the flat part of the axle towards the flat part of the ring gear? just a thought. I will look up how this is on my Axial.

the assumption is that the hole is centered but the bevel might be cut a bit too deep in either the shaft or the hub by pushing the shaft onto the bevel it might end up just a bit off center and maybe incur bearing wear. same as with the bevels on motors and pinions |

Figure this was the best way as other brand do this as well as. Plus, this is the same way you mount a pinion to a motor shaft. | |

Since the ring gear is already technically on a spool I'm not sure how this is a "locker."

The tolerances between the spool and axles aren't great so there is slop. This locks things to together to reduce slop in the drive train. Same idea as this, Axial Wraith Locker for SCX10 and AX10 Type Axles - Vanquish Products |

I love this idea, would it be any better to drill all the way through the gear and shaft and use one of the traxxas set screw pins like used for drive yolks? Sent from my SCH-S738C using Tapatalk |

I would imagine if you were very exact with the drilling and sizing between the hole and pin, it could work. Other wise there would may be no improvement.

I was thinking more to spread the load to the shaft and lock it to the ring gear shaft input. I have a drill press and access to a bridgeport so precision isnt an issue. Sent from my SCH-S738C using Tapatalk |
