WOW!! 13T Crawlmaster is one hot motor for a portal axled rig. I'd be very concerned about the portal drive gears able to withstand all that wheel speed without snapping any drive pins holding the portal gears. Not to say it cannot be done. Usually a 13T handwound motor is for rock racing but the portal gears are meant for torque over wheelspeed. Unfortunately the r1 is not popular enough for companies like Robinson Racing to make upgraded gears for the axles or even the tranny for that matter.

IF he is dead set on that motor then I'd suggest dropping in an Axial AX10/SCX10 tranny loaded with Robinson internals and a 32p gear swap instead of 48p for durability. Also look into better drive shafts because Gmade shafts are almost as bad as rc4wd plastic shafts. MIPs or Junfacs will be fine.

As far as axles go swap out the portals with SCX10 axles and it's up to you whether or not to upgrade the internals on those as well. IMO I would just upgrade the axle parts as they break. Stock AX10/SCX10 axles are pretty durable as is.

Good luck!
