Default R1 still a viable option?

Love the look of the R1. But does it hang with the current crop of crawlers?
Want to make sure I'm not wasting my money. Is there another comparable to it?
Thanks

They are a good deal, inexpensive to run and maintain, they look good too. There are better crawlers at both the scale end and competition end of the spectrum. I run two R1s, just for for fun. One has four wheel steering, a dig unit and all the aluminum/steel upgrades, the other is box stock with upgraded tires. The weak link seems to be the small bearings in the portal axles and wide turning radius for steering.

Thanks for the answer, I have a redcat racing everest 10. Was wanting maybe something a bit better for crawling. (lower CoG)

Gmade R1 was my first crawler and I think it was an excellent choice. It is by no means a comp crawler, but with tuning it can hold its own and out-perform the vast majority of scalers.

That review says it all, it's outdated. Even with upgrades it doesn't keep up with a stock Wraith.

I still have and love mine after 6 years. I've had Wraiths and SCX10's which I've sold, but still have the good ol R1.
