Default GOM - Talk me out of it.

Been watching some GOM videos today and it looks like a fun rig.

I want to order the Plus kit and I want to run it on 1.9 wheels and 4.75 inch tires.

Any reason I couldn’t or shouldn’t?

Anything weaknesses I should be aware of?

Let me hear those opinions.

Thanks.👍🏼

Love mine. The two speed is pretty picky and others have reported weakness in the cage but it crawls like crazy. The center of gravity is perfect IMO.

I’m not much of a basher, so it would be more of a Crawler for me.

I’ve seen a few complaints about difficulty in shifting, any tips in that department?

Check the various GOM threads in the gmade crawlers section. Some people used washers between the shift housing. I haven't done that and I greased mine really well. It works for me so far. Also make sure to set end points properly for the shifting. It does crawl very well though which is what I use it for.

I'm a GMade fan, but the GOM looks like a huge PITA to work on and that is enough to turn me off from it.

The GOM is still one of my all-time favorite R/C's. It's not a hardcore basher but it is an excellent crawler. Underrated and overlooked IMO, but the positive side of that is you don't see them everywhere.

Do it

I like look of the GOM as it reminds me more of a KOH rig than the Wraith.

Going to get the Kit Plus edition as I like the grey cage work.

Just need to find a paint theme that goes with them gray cage. 🤔

I agree that it's possibly the best looking KOH-style rig out there, but if I had one I'd probably want to drive it as hard as Shannon Campbell drives the Dragon Slayer...

It is a pain to work on for sure, I've broken a few front CV's (there are some fixes) but I can overlook that because I still really enjoy the GOM, it does crawl great and has a nice balance to it. That is once you have the sway bar, its just like a bomber flexing a bit too much without it. I think if you really want to run 1.9s then you may want narrow axles if that's even feasible. I went the other direction and found the biggest 2.2s I could find (J Concepts Scorpios) just because I know how much Bombers, Wraiths and the like can drag belly and axles.

The 2 speed is difficult to dial in, the sweet spot for the end points is very narrow. The servo seems at its happiest when in the middle position (1st gear) and its a bit strained in dig and 2nd though it should spend less time in those positions. I've done the "washer mod" sticking washers between the shift cover and its housing and that helped with shifting.

I love working on RCs. I just hate when simple tasks are made more difficult by bad designs.

Hard to work on, yes. Bad design, no. Its hard to work on because the mechanical bits (including CMS and a 2-speed with dig, remember) are all crammed together to make room for the full interior. It's a trade-off.

I’ve liked this rig since it was first released. I’ve hemmed and hawed and gone back and forth about getting one. Most of the indecision being that I really don’t drive my other 2.2 rigs very often. I pretty well wrote it off. But, I just found one on Ebay, brand new, listed as “make offer”. I low balled the heck out of it and pretty much forgot about it. Got the “offer accepted” email last night!

Pretty sure I’m going to do Dragon Slayer tribute with it.

Dezfan - did you end up running yours 1.9?

Congrats with the deal, how much you end up getting it for?
I have been looking and reading about GOM, what buys me is that it is pretty rare and rear tail looks just awesome. Will be my next one.

THere are updated version 2 CVD's for it that use a sleeve instead of a spring retainer. I haven't posted much lately, but I'll post it up soon.

I’ve got the V2 cvd’s and some other upgrade goodies sitting in a cart at junfac.com. I wish there were other / more sources for option and upgrade parts, but it is what it is. I’m definitely going the Dragon Slayer tribute route. I’ve already been reviewing and saving photos of Shannon Campbell’s rig. Pretty sure I’m going to make aluminum body panels that more closely replicate the 1:1. Obviously it won’t be ifs, but I’m ok with that. Also, seems like he runs Nitto Trail Grapplers exclusively. I’ve only been able to find them in 1.9 though. I may stretch them on to 2.2’s, but I don’t want to lose too much sidewall height. I’ll post up a thread and pics when I get in to it. I’ve got about 3 other projects going on right now though - I really didn’t need another one but.........

I picked the GOM because it looked the most scale to me. It has some engineering faults but nothing that can't be worked out. I came up with a fix for the shift reliability by loosing the plastic part and tunnel half's, replaced with a slider tube. Most of all it looks more realistic and crawls like a billy goat.

Did those fix the issue with the pin and drive cups having too little contact (its like .5mm or less) thats also a big part of it IMO. Also did they get the pin size right? originals were too short.

I pieced together my version of the V2 axles with some driveline rebuild kits but I can still break them using dig (stupidly I must add)

Did you ever figure out how to post pics? I recall you started a thread and weren't able to post pics.
I'd be interested to see this slider tube, is that an RC part or what?
