I'm currently running a sensored brushless setup at the moment. It's an awesome system for the money! The servo is also good for the money.

ESC: Hobby King 35A Sensored/Sensorless Car ESC
Motor: Turnigy TrackStar 17.5T Sensored Brushless Motor 2270KV
Servo: Solar D772

I'm not changing the pinion because I like the noise!

I am thinking about going brushed so I can run through water. I ordered the items below from HobbyKing. Now I need to determine the correct turns before I buy a motor.

ESC: HobbyKing X-Car 45A Brushed Car ESC
Servo: BMS-630MG Super Strong Servo 13kg / .17sec / 49g

I am running a cheap sensored brushless system right now. It is working really well and I highly recommend it for it's price and crawling ability. It's this one: SKYRC Cheetah 2590KV 13 5T Sensored Brushless Motor CS60 60A ESC Combo ME640 | eBay

I use an 8t pinion for maximum torque - I think it's a Parma. I have never noticed a noise difference in pinion brands. If your pinion is noisy, you probably don't have it adjusted right.

My servo, however, is the most expensive servo I have ever bought (and I have been buying servos of over 30 years). This one is awesome - Savox SB-2270SG "Monster Torque" Brushless Steel Gear Digital Servo (High Voltage) [SAV-SB-2270SG] | Radios & Accessories - A Main Hobbies

I am very happy with this setup.

I'm happy with my setup. Crawls great, and has plenty of wheel speed if need.

I bought this one as a back up for Sawback and SCX10. I ended up buying a used Wraith and installed it in there instead. I have not had in water so I can't vouch for the waterproofing, but it turns the tires without any problem.

It's been a while since this thread has seen any love...

I'm running:

RC4WD 35turn Motor
Yeah racing 60amp ESC (rebranded HobbyWing)
Power HD servo (High torque, high volt, metal gears, aluminum case)

I picked up the ESC and servo as a combo at RCMart and they're surprisingly good quality for the low price.

2S or 3S LiPo
