I've been wanting a Komodo for a while so my kids got it for my birthday

It's been a slow start, the motor went poof on the initial bench test and the radio stopped working the next day.

I ordered from RPP so I emailed and the told me to send them the old motor and they will replace it, but in the mean time, I installed an RC4WD 35t.

After getting the body bits put on, the receiver or radio failed so I'm using a Traxxas TQi.

The Truck was assembled well, everything was tight and smooth so the kids and I took it out to the backyard rockpile along with the Ascender and the HG P402.

We took all three through the same lines for comparison and here are the initial impressions:

Turning radius needs work so I ordered CVD's, zero Ackerman knuckles, and a bent tie rod.

The shocks are set with mostly droop and it appears to work well, but they seem a little too long, even with the body as low as it can go, the ride height is high for my taste so I may try a shorter shock.

The tires are not as sticky as the stock Ascender tires or the OG Flatirons on the HG so it had some traction issues, I'll try some other tires and try some softening tricks and different foams on the stock tires.

I swapped tires between the Ascender and the Komodo and hit the rockpile, the bigger and stickier tires improved performance.

The Komodo tires impeded the Ascender a bit, but the extra weight seemed to make the Komodo tires flex better.

I tried the Flatirons on the Komodo and it helped a lot.

And I installed the CVD's, zero Ackerman knuckles, new tie rod and drag link, and axle weights and I'm really impressed with the performance.

I installed a Tamiya light controller, still waiting on more LED's for backup lights.

I wanted to add more weight down low and I remembered that I'm a recovering redneck so here's what I came up with.

5/8 flat washers are a finger press fit into the stock wheels and I put 2 in each wheel. I don't have a scale, but it adds some weight.

The only issue was the stock hexes have a large ring behind the hex that didn't fit into the washer hole so I swapped to these 7mm clamping hexes I had in my stash.

It works great and I have an idea for more weight, I'll post when I get it done.

I have an HG P402 that I've spent way too much time and money on for very little progress so I parted it out.

I do like the body so I measured the wheelbase on all my rigs and it fits the Komodo and and TF2 so I decided to drill new holes and run the HG body on the Komodo chassis. The track is a little narrow so I will install some wideners and figure out what to do about the bumpers.

The gearing was a little high so I installed a 45t motor and 9t pinion. On 3s, it has a good trailing speed and it still crawls well.

Rough day on the rockpile, the weeds wrapped around the tire and broke the CVD.

Somehow by brother-in-law managed to break both front CVDís on the rock pile so I decided to buy gmade CVDís rather than GPM and see how long they last...

You had the GPM's? I have both the GMade/Junfac and GPM's for my Sawback 4LS. Right now it's using the GMade/Junfac ones. I've read that breakage for both happen on 3S power. I'm still on 2S power so.... no issues yet.

I broke one GPMCVD, but it was my fault, the front axle had viny weeds wrapped around it and I kept driving so shame on me. We had a Halloween party so I had a bunch of crawlers out for people to play with and I went to get another beer or something and when I got back, by brother-in-law told me be broke it, but no details so I have no idea what he did. I pulled the weeds so it wasnít that...

As to 2s vs 3s power, thereís only issues if you donít exercise throttle control, the reason I run 3s is so I can gear down for good crawling and still have enough speed for trailing. The Komodo rtr comes with a 27t motor and that failed so Iím running a 45t and itís just right on 3s.
