Default "THE WIDDLER" it's a Clod thing!

Well here it is...... "THE WIDDLER"

My thinking when building this Rig was really focused on Three things: High Clearance, Low COG, and...... "The Stick"( It's the Machine to Beat Right?). While thinking about the "Stick" I concluded that one of it's strongest points is it's Inherent Narrowness(giving it even less to get hung up on), so I did every thing I could to keep "The Widdler" Narrow and ended up with 2 1/2" for a Chassis width(just enough to fit the ESC and Receiver between the Chassis rails). The COG ended up Awesome, it will sit on it's Side 90*(Two Wheels) without falling over on it's lid, even with a 14 Volt setup(Two Large Batterys strapped on top of the links). Clearance is Pretty good at 6 inches(under the Skid Plate), and I figured out that I could get way more clearance from the rear motor by making the Rear-Upper Links a Hair longer (With a Small sacrifice in Steering of course ). It Seems to be pretty Darn Tough so far, it's been through a little torture!

Some Specs

16" wheelbase

15" wheeltrack(outside tire)

7 3/4" overall height(top of Shock Mounts)

6" underbelly/skidplate

8 1/2" chassis length

2 1/2" chassis width

*Chassis Construction:

Aluminum Stock- 1/8" x 3/4"x 3/4 L Angle(Main Chassis Rails), 1/8" x 1" Flat(Shock Towers), 1/4" x 049 Round Tubing(Links and Chassis Braces).

Steel ALLTHREAD- 6-32, 4-40

Nuts & Bolts- 6-32, 4-40

Traxxas Rod ends Package #1942(one package is just right for 1 Complete Chassis)

Duratrax Body Mounts

**Running Gear:

Clod Axles JB Welded Diffs

G-Made Upper Link Mounts(NICE!)

55T Lathe Motors 13/10 Pinions

2 1/4" Shocks x4

HiTec 645 servos with custom 1/8" Aluminum Servo Mounts & Kimbrough Savers x2

Aluminum Front Hubs

1" Narrowed(Off the Insides) Outback Wheels w/Siped Moabs 8 ounces of weight in each of the Front and 2 ounces in each of the Rear(Lead wire Glued to the Wheels with CA), and Star Cut Foams.

***Tools

HackSaw

Drill

Course Sandpaper

Screwdrivers

Wrenches

Pliers

Tape Measure

Notice the Extra Clearance from longer Upper Links on the Rear Motor(Left)

Here is a "Basic Materials" Pic

looks very nice. How is that tubing holding up for links? did you run the all thread all the way through? or only part way? I'm gonna be using the same tube on my mad force but i havn't tried it yet.

now you just need to bend some high clearance lower links. although i dont know if that would make much of a difference in ur case. looks good. now go beat a stick up for its lunch money.

I'm pretty happy with it so far, but honestly the quest to get my Rigs "Dialed" never ends. See for yourself how it does, here is some Video footage with a lot of "WIDDLER" Action!!!

thats alot to compete with. I suppose ill have to attempt to give a clod the shaft. haha. I don't expect to win though. I liked how the TLT and the Clod were helpin each other. When do you guys have your get togethers? I always seem to miss them because i never know about them! let me know please!

IMO... AllThread/Tubing links are the Way to Go. Yes the Allthread goes all the way through the tubing and the Rod Ends Screw onto it.

Nice truck, but it doesn't look like it would get that much travel out of those small shocks, IMO

he should be getting plenty of travel because the shocks are mounted so far up the links. makes more leverage and a longer travel in a shorter stroke.

nice clod! where did you come up with the name though? I noticed that you said that the main goal was to make something better than a stick. By "widdler" do you me "whittle"? like "at boyscout camp kids whittle sticks so that they are pointed or have designs carved into them."
sorry about the lesson but that was the only thing about this progect that was bugging me. if you ment the word that is "to carve in a stick, branch, or other piece of wood." then you ment whittle.

sweet clod though

Hahaha, that was great.

Eh, whatever it is, it's a really good looking design. The small shocks make a lot sense to me. Lighter.
What's that red battery you have mounted, it looks a little different?

I used to play that Frogger game. Those were so cool back then.

i like using as small of shocks as possible but these days the crawlers are getting alot lighter but the tire compounds have remained (a little softer but not any softer in the last few months to a year....thats when they really started goin light weight) So this makes loss of traction. Proline, i think, should make the moabs in their softer compound (m2? or is it m3? too lazy to look). I guess what im saying is even though i like shorter shocks I don't see the need for any more weight reduction. But that truck is very cool and looks like a great competitor. in the video it looked like it could use a little bit more tire flex though.
