Default ? about already cut up Kongs

Mine are narrowed to 3". Treads sipped. 6" foam on inside.

The treads fold in on themselves so only the outer edges get taction. I thought about using a 1" wide piece of the stock foam in the center to help support it. Not to sure if it would be to stiff or soft or what.

What have the Kong genies been doing to solve this problem

I just use a narrowed Kong foam in each. It's also cut down on height a bit as well.

Does the narrowed Kong foam go from sidewall to sidewall or does it just cover the center area of the tire?

How much did you cut it down? 1/4"

What do you think about wrapping a soft foam on the outside of a 6" foam?

All I can really tell you is to try out several different methods until you like the performance.
I cut the foams, slightly, "tacked" the tires back on the wheels with a couple of drops of CA, tested it.......took the tires back off, cut some more foam off, tacked the tires back on, etc, etc.

Cool, I'll give er a whirl. Think I may combine foam. A firm inner foam with a soft outer.

Hey Dirk,

How do these cut tires you run hold up to high speed bashing? I'm SERIOUSLY concidering getting some Kongs but kinda leary of cutting. The way I'm gonna build my rig is with a Maxx 2 speed and do all my gearing with the pinions and spur. I know it won't be SUPER low like some of you guys but I wanna try and build a dual perpose rig and kinda meet in the middle with some things. I'll have to give up a little here and there to gain a little in other areas but, I'd like to try it anyway. I wanna gear it so 1st is low enough to crawl decently and 2nd is geared real close to a stock maxx's 1st gear. That way I can use 2nd gear to bash and release a little anger if need be.

The thing that scares me is at high speeds the tires may come apart. If there's a slight chance they'll come apart,I will probly leave them uncut and maybe just play with trimming treads. Do you think trimming and adding treads will help them conform to rocks better or is the most performance gain coming from making them SKINNY?

Thanks
Steve

what id suggest now i havent done it ut the theory sounds goodmake sure you use the rubberized ca when you blue them together and then take that center section you cut out whether is be in 2 pieces or one just use one of them cover it in rubberized ca and put it on the seem it will hold it together far better than just the threads holding it together

I decided to try cutting the Kong foams to 1 1/4" wide. It was easier and quicker. I just put them inthe wheel. they are held in place by the rim. I'm not gluing the foam to the tire because the CA glue hold the tire halves together just fine. I actually sanded off all the extra glue on the outside surface of the tire. I didnt use any extra rubber to glue on the inside. All is good!

I really doubt they'd come appart due to any type of wheeling.

The problem is the way it would handle with narrowed KOngs. It'd be like trying to drive fast in a 1:1 rock crawler with 44 inch tires. You'd be all over the place!

Good to hear,I may just have to put them under the knife when I get them.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, sounds like a wild ride I know what your saying though,my Toyota isn't built all that extreme and it can be a handfull in certain situations, even with my iddy bitty 35's. Should be alot of fun when I finally get my 38's.
