| Cool custom build, the RCCAV
I've been working on this project for a long time, but finally today just got it into the roller state. R.C.C.A.V. RCCrawler Assault Vehicle. Stage 1 is just just the running vehicle, I should have that done here very shortly. Stage 2 will be a weapons system. This will consist of an airsoft gun, and a wireless video camera all operated by the radio. Specs: 34 inches long, 23 inches wide, 8 inches tall, and nearly 70 pounds. Gear: 6 RC4WD 40 series Rock crushers, 6 Axial 40 series beadlocks, 6 550 size motors, 6 planetary gearboxes, 2 17,000mah 12 volt batteries, 2 Castle Creations Monster Maxes, 1 Futaba 6EX 2.4ghz radio system. The side chassis plates are all cut from 1/8" steel, the top, bottom, front and back are all 1/4" black delrin. The 2 pods are held together by 4 3/8" shank bolts into slotted holes to allow for articulation. If my calculations are correct this 70lb beast should do right around 10MPH. All I have left to do is to wire it and install the electronics and we'll see how it does. I am working with Northwest trac tech on some custom tire foams to be able to handle this amount of weight, and I am still second guessing my battery choice. I am thinking about maybe having some custom NIMH packs built instead. Onto the pics. |

| Let me rephrase this.......I am getting within radio range of you. I think you are going to need to add about 16oz to the front, 8 in the centers and 4 in the rear. Seriously man, thats going to be bad ass! Plenty of room to hold all the airsoft bb's too. Its bigger than I thought it was. |

Nice to see this ready to rock! For plowing your driveway the lead acid will work well. For shooting things a lighter pack would certainly be nice. What voltage are you running it on? 12 or 24v?

John I still haven't figured out how low I can run these batteries? Drive it till it won't drive then charge like a NiMH or do I need to set a low voltage cutoff? | ||

You would be best off to only use half of the battery capacity and then immediately recharge- this will make them last very long. Lead acid generallly doesn't like deep cycles. 10.8v is dead if I remember correctly. Somewhere around 12v should be half capacity, maybe a touch under that voltage.

So I should be good if I set the cutoff on the Monster maxes to 12v?

Yeah, as long as the batteries take the discharge asked of them. They should since you have so much capacity. I would be interested to see the amp draw of that sucker.

The stall rating of each motor is 85 amps.

You won't be stalling them at full throttle methinks. The batteries should take about 170 amps for a minute or two, 5c discharge rate.
