Default what pinion gear...........

getting ready to do my tuber build and i have a holmes 55t hand wound 540 motor and i'm getting a 88 tooth spur gear....what's a good pinion gear range to start with 8, 9, 10, 11....i know stock ax10 is 14....i know the bigger the pinion the more wheel speed i'll have.............bob

what voltage are you gonna be running? That will have alot to do with what gears you run.

In my sons Axial ,we were running a 55t for a while. We were running it on a 3 cell lipo(11.1 volts) Stock spur,87 tooth, and a 17t pinion. It was pretty good. Now he's running a 35t hand wound with 87t spur/15t pinion still on a 3 cell. Really seems to work well.

either set up would be allot different on say 7-8 NiMH cells.

duh, sorry bout that....i have a 10 cell saddle pack at 12 volts elite 1500................bob

You got the voltage. You may wanna try the stock gearing and see how you like it. I've read that some guys are happy with the stock gearing on high voltage. Everyone has different taste/driving style. If your planning on a front dig set up,wheel speed is what makes a dig work. Somewhere between a 15t and 17t pinion would be my choice.
