Removing chrome on plastic wheels, before or after glue up

I have narrowed a set of proline 40 beadlocks and would like to remove the chrome finish and dye them. Should I remove the finish and dye them before or after I glue them back together? Also what is the best dye to use?

I did this with my first rig 3 years ago. If I had to do it over, I would go about it a bit differently. Removing the chrome can be done with thinner, but it's a pain.

You're best bet is to simply grab 2 cans of paint; Krylon Fusion Primer, and your choice of Fusion color. Spray the rim with the primer to kill the chrome and prepare the surface for the finish coat, then just hit it with the color.

Be sure to use Fusion paint though, it will adhere much better than straight spary paint. The thing with the Fusion, is that the longer you let it sit and cure, the harder it gets, so let them sit as long as you can before you mount your tires and crawl.

I have used the super cheap steel wool pads. The ones I used had the blue soap added on them.
Takes medium to hard scrubbing. Doesn't get all the small places though.

use easy off to remove chrome from plastic . all you need is to have a old pot around big enough and spray each wheel with it and let sit for about 5 minute then use a tooth brush to scrap at it repeat this a few times and well presto, clean it off with water. you can do this with ruber on or with out but its leaves a white resido on the rubb so i would do it with out as fare as dye goes go to a fabric shop and look for dye i use rit

Did this to a set of T-Maxx wheels worked great. Take your time,boil the water add the dye. Remember the longer you leave it in the darker it will become.

instesd of "easy off" I used "AMWAY" oven cleaner, covered my wheels in it for 5-10 min. in the laundry tub, then just washed them under the tap. I also gave the tub a quick scrub with the excess foam after so the missus was happy

Thanks for all the coments, I guess that I should clarify that the wheel is still in two half's. If I glue before I strip the finish will the oven cleaner eat the ca glue. Also should I dye them before I ca the two half's back together or after? I am not sure if the dye will take to places that have been glued.

definatly strip the chrome before gluing, not sure if the oven cleaner will afect the glue but better safe than sorry I'd say, not sure about the dye though, I'm sure someone has cut, glued, & dyed wheels before but I'm not sure if you'd glue or dye first
