Default Misc. hardware; buy in bulk or as needed?

Hi there,

Seems that everytime I'm working on something I get delayed by not having a bolt or locknut etc. etc. So projects sit till I can make it to lowes or something.

What do you guys do? Buy hardware in bulk or on a as needed basis? I'm really just getting started in the hobby & only have 2 trucks I'm working on, so I don't have much of a 'shop' to pull parts from.

I'm talking about smaller parts, various small MM hex heads, cap screws, locknuts, etc. If you do buy in bulk (i.e. a mixed set) do you happen to have any links for a decent set?

Thx,

Mark

I started by buying as needed, but with extras. If I need a 4-40 locknut, I'll buy a bag of 10 or two. I now have a nice box of small hardware although I do occasionally have to run to the hardware store for something in the middle of a project. Also sometimes you can get a screw set for a particular model from the manufacturer.

Thats pretty much what I have done. Even if I have no other projects forseen its always nice to have some extra's on hand for when things go wrong when driving. Its also nice to buy both metric and standard, just be sure to keep them in seperate boxes. I buy all of my hardware from the LHS that I work at.

Also, buy yourself a couple compartmentalized boxes from a fishing and tackle place. Nice and cheap and come in handy.

Dont know what your paying at Lowes for a bag of bolts...

But check out www.mcmaster.com

I get most of my hardware there. I can get 12.9 grade steel screws for $8.50 for a bag of 50 screws.

So Im paying ~ $.017 a screw.

Default Extra Screwz

I have been using this place, RC Screwz - http://www.rcscrewz.com/, for quite a while. They are quite reasonable, have a very good selction and can deliver quickly.

They also have a great seletion of screw set for various trucks.

rcscrewz are stainless steel. decent...

But they dont compare to 12.9 Blue Oxide screws.

something like 179,000psi of tensile strength.

I buy in bulk from a place here locally called Fastenal. They sell bags of 100 screws for only a couple of bucks. And they are all stainless steel. So you don't have to worry about them breaking or rusting. They are nation wide i think. Alot cheaper than Lowe's.

Before these companies started producing sets for cars i used to sell alot of sets on ebay for like $10 to $15. Assorted 4-40 lengths with allen heads, button heads, flush mount and nuts and washers.

Check in your local phone book. Someone like this company should offer the same thing where you are at. Keeps from having to order off the net and wait for delivery.

^^ Yeah, thats kind of what I was looking for. I'll have to keep an eye out for something similar. Hmmm...maybe harbor freight will have something.

don't get me wrong, strength is good, but what do you want to snap/bend first, the chassis or one little ****in screw?

Thats one reason I never bought aluminum for my maxx when it was a basher, you have to go all aluminum otherwise, parts that flexed together before don't, the aluminum just transfers all the force right to the bulk head or whatever the next stock part in line is.

I agree 12.9 is way overkill for what we are doing. Most 1:1's use grade 8's or 8.8's. But if that is what you want, go for it.

So I just got back from ACE hardware & I couldnt believe the prices for small hardware. 3mm Hex Head bolt .95c/each! Same for the corresponding nut!

Gotta find a cheaper source....

I have been buying all my hardware from Westlake here locally. I noticed that individual pieces are quite high, ranging from .25 to 1.00 a piece.. A box of 100 or 50 is only around 4-6 bucks. I definately buy in bulk to save money.

Always in bulk - either through local shops or mcmaster.com

It's the only way to go!

Well...I started ordering from Mcmaster. Since they're in Jersey, I can place an order & have it the next day, not too bad & also not terribly expensive.
