Default Raptor 2's... Biggest mistake

What to do...

The low-down... I'm building a super based crawler. Drivetrain is two raptor type 2 axles, Integy 85t motors, 40 series Moab XL's powered by two sidewinder ESC's. I test drove last night with the 11 tooth pinions they came with... Way too fast. I dropped down to a 6 tooth pinion. Speed was good but no torque whatsoever. Time to break out the castle link and program. I adjusted the throttle curve and set the starting power to high and still, not enough torque to muscle up an incline. Looks like I have to fork up $80 for GRU's

What batteries are You running? Raising the voltage is never a bad idea

Been there, done that. I got mine in an Ebay package deal so it was'nt so huge a waste for me.

The problems will keep coming unfortunately. Once you do figure out how to generate a little usable torque, then you'll start breaking stuff. If you don't bend/break the drive pins, you'll seperate the main gear from the shaft.

Also, try all the mods you can think of, you'll still never get any decent steering range out of them.

The steering range problem was the first big hurdle, then when I ran mine w/ 65t lathes on 7.2 volts w/ 6t pinions, it was still like a race truck. Way too fast and no torque at all. I gave up on them at that point and shelved them in favor of a pair of Berg axles.

Volting up will just make them even faster. What they need is gear reduction, which is impossible with an add-on unit due to space constraints. Or if you have a machine shop and a lot of know-how to try to make you own set of gears for them...

Yep they suck. I built a pretty decent 2.2 out of a set of Raptor's but the gear ratio is way too high for a super. Id steer away from the RC4WD GRU's too they are less than impressive. The PTI GRU's made for the Goliath might work for ya or maybe even the HPI ones for the WK.
