Default Kyosho ST Crawler

I posted a vid of this earlier here.

Truggy on the rocks..

and since I found out that building it wasn't just a waste of time and driving it was even better then I thought, I started a kinda build thread.

specs so far...
an old Kyosho ST (I think...rtr version forgot the exact name)
some mods, mostly because the rtr was stuffed with weak parts so I replaced them with ST-R stuff
2 pede trannys/ 35t motors

That's a really cool example of using what you have. It doesn't crawl half bad either. Good job.

running 2 motors the esc didn't want to share power to the servo sometimes so I 'm gonna try running a receiver pack..either that or I have a glitchy servo or receiver...

think I got it wired right..someone tell me if I didn't

You could just install a Castle BEC unit and have plenty of power for the servo`s. They are a pretty inexpensive piece.

any particular reason why you linked the two trannies together? You could have dig so easily if you didn't... Anyways, it seems to crawl pretty well, and you make very good videos.

Thanks, now I know what to look for the next time I'm at the LHS. Looks to be about the same price as a receiver bat. pac. would cost anyways.

I linked them because I wasn't sure if the rear motor would have enough torque to not stall out, but after running it I think it might be ok to run with out the middle shaft. Anyways for now I'm gonna leave it like that because I only have a 2 channel radio, but dig set up does sounds like a good future project. Thanks!

yeah you could setup a electronic dig system like we use on our berg trucks and have front and rear dig on it very easily. i really like it man, it definitely crawls better than i thought it would.

are your trannies locked? if you remove the shaft between the two trans...
the unused output will spin.. and not your tires(when you get a load on it)

did a little tweaking to the suspension to try and get every inch of articulation out of it..

doesn't get as much as a solid axle can, but its enough to get over most stuff.

Did a chop job to the chassis to try and get more clearance. Not done yet, still need to add some supports here and there and get the servo mounted.

nice! I'm going to watch this. I'm interested to see how good you can make this. Looks like you have a good start. I too want to see it with bigger, more aggressive tires.

Thanks, yeah tires will be next on my list. Been searching the web to see what there is, but no much to choose from for super size stuff..

anyways finished with the upper supports. The chassis and axle housing doesn't really have many places to mount supports, so I did the best I could. It still flexes a little, but I guess I'll just have to test it to see if it holds up.

I would call it the scaredy cat because it looks like a scared cat arching it's back. The proline maxx mashers might be a good choice. or the badlands. Also people seem to like the panther plow boys when you make them bigger. Also if you want to take the time and effort, get some good 2.2 tires and cut them and add to them to fit a 3.2" wheel. I would try the new losi comp claws, panther cougars, proline chisels, or hot bodies rovers. i have heard all good things about those and bringing them up to 3.2" inner diameter should bring them to about 6 and a quarter to 6 and a half outer diameter. There is also the Moab XL tires but they aren't the best tread and at over 7 inches, they may be too tall for your wheel base. What is your wheel base by the way?

Thanks for the info! My wheel base is around 14.5". I was thinking about the 3.2 Maxx Mashers, but wasn't sure if they would be much taller then what I got now. So I was going to go with the Moad XL's stretched over these rims..but after mounting just the rims they looked pretty big already..could used the extra clearance though...

oh and I left out the center shaft and put a smaller pinion in the rear. So far just crawling around the house I didn't get any clodstall, but it still needs to be tested on the real rocks.

yeah the maxx mashers wouldn't be much taller. They are a much better crawling tread though. That's why I was saying turning a tall 2.2 into a 3.2 because that would be a great tread and probably a good height. The moab xl tires should be good as well though. They might be on the big side for a 14.5" wheel base though. The tires you have on the rig now aren't THAT small. They are just a LITTLE bit small. Moab xls will end up being almost 2 inches taller but if you have the cash to try them, go for it!
