well guys this is the problem here... if you get too much torque on the cylinders, they will just be forced to move... however with the two way VARIABLE valve that JIA found, you could minimize this affect... and the more pressure u can force into those cylinders, the more resistant it would be to being forced... im very interested to see if you could actually make this work (not that i would do it myself, i jus wanna see if it can be done well). keep this one updated

LOL those things are great but they run out fairly quick... ive never checked how much pressure they hold, but im sure it cant be too much... plus they are fairly bulky...

Well i went and read up on those variable SPEED valves... all it says it variable SPEED ... it doesnt say anything about stopping the cylinder in any position u want... so i dont know if this would be an equivilent to proportional steering....

Whats the point in all this if you have to run a HUGE tank in order to run it for more than a few turns?

A show truck I guess?

you could try using a CO2 tank from a paintball gun those last for a while, but you'd have to find one small enough.

Use .22 blanks, the kind used in nail guns. Load 'em up on a belt-fed system. The only downside is you'd have to pick 'em all up after every run.
And if you run a Chevrolet body on it you get the added realism of backfires!

Why not just run 100 feet of 3/8 air hose to a 80 gallon 3 phase rotary compressor? I guarantee you won't run out of air then. The hose hanging out the back may cause truck to flip over though.

This is an interesting thread, but is your goal functional steering or the WOW factor? I've been looking for a worm drive servo to use on my crawler. No it's not fast but neither is my crawler. But it would turn any size of tire. Anyone seen a worn drive servo in a reasonable size?

Oh, sorry for the hi-jack.

what type of cylenders would you need then? to get droop and compression with it? thanks

i saw CO2 cylinders suggested twice. whats the verdict on those? i know my my 20 lb CO2 tank on my 1:1 crawler lasts FOREVER, and i fill 38" tires almost every trip out.

Whats my verdict on these??? hmmm i dont think you could get one light enuff to even consider using on an RC crawler... the lightest CO2 tank ive come across was still like 5 pounds... maybe you could jus integrate the "tank" into something already on the crawler? like use the tube frame, like seal it and use that... or maybe u could make a special frame out of something a lil bigger... iunno jus thinkin out loud...

i found a CO2 tank for a paintball gun in both 9oz and 14oz, they don't seem that big and atleast 400shots so it should last for a little while at least

well yeah they would last a long *** time, the only thing is that they are so damn heavy its just unreasonable . i mean heck, if u want a really heavy, high CG crawler then go for it ... lol my point is, you just cant get a CO2 tank light enuff to even consider for a setup like this

have you ever seen pneumatic landing gear work, the ones ive seen are like bam, all the way out and quick. not really what you would want as a steering.

with what? r u talkin bout the variable control valves? cuz if u are, those are adjusted by a knob that has to be twisted by hand... and that still doesnt mean its goin to be proportional, that jus means it will take longer to go from stop to stop

Regardless, the tanks don't have a large enough volume of air to run the system for any length of time.
