| What material is this?
Hi. I'm intending to make a new chassis for my Maxx crawler out of some kind of composite material, I was either going to use delrin sheet or something lighter with the same strength. Some years back there was a fibrous material sometimes used for rc buggie chassis, it was a pale green colour and very strong. Does anyone know what it was called? Other than that, is there any other material to consider? Thanks, Neil. |

I would think it would be graphite. Its used on carpet cars to. Its not cheap but you could use carbon fiber also.

It almost looks like naked PC board material.

It's Epoxy, Carbon fibers are bonded with Epoxy resin so its pretty tough

Brilliant, that's the stuff. Thanks. It's been bugging me for years what it was called. I used to make shock towers and other parts from it 20 odd years ago. |

It might be Garolite, a fiberglass reinforced material with a variety of matrices (binders) including epoxy resin. Comes with or without the copper backing for circuit boards, in several varieties including FR4 and G-10. I have used it for some time for small parts on helis and crawlers. A friend used it for a complete heli frame. Strong, light and tough, easier to work than aluminium, doesn't fatigue or corrode, easy to bond with epoxy, holds paint well too. The only issue is it will blunt your tools a little quicker than metal. Love it! Lots of good info here http://www.mcmaster.com/#plastics/=40jamh . Cheers. |

g-10 is good stuff! ive used single layer g-10 and dyed 4 layers different colors, then bonded all 4 together with epoxy resin and cut it out for knife handles. when you shape it at diagional angles you get multi colors and its really strong stuff too!

G10 is tough stuff...They use is for RC helicopter frame the whole way up to gas powered rc copters. I would think it would make a great crawler frame while being cheaper and easier to deal with than carbon fiber.
