Check these out. Before I go into how I made them, let me tell you how I intend to use them. This is going to be a Loooooonnngg term project, or big-azz money pit, or never happen at all. Each wheel will have one of these portals. The truck will have two transmissions and four driveshafts, two motors and two ESC's. Here's the clever bit. The ESC's will be mixed using a V-Tail mixer to allow side-to side digs, sort of like a Bobcat loader. This should allow very tight turns. I could run axles, or independent suspension. Center clearance is infinite, since there's no pumpkin. I could tie the axles together at the top of the portals for a solid-axle setup. Right now this is purely experimental. What you see is a mockup using a Suliivan Tiger Drive nitro engine starter and a Maxx stub axle with the U-joint cut off. A little Loctite took care of the one-way bearing in the Tiger Drive. The drive ratio is way too high and there's no bearing support, so this setup isn't workable as-is, but the concept has promise, if I decide to go ahead with a two-tranny crawler with a ton of custom machine work required to make it happen. |

Yeah, a few more are required. I just realized that the wheels don't actually steer. It's a bit more like a Bobcat than I had hoped. Back to the drawing board.... |

I was working on a way to do side digs as well, although I don't think it is quite as complex as this. Innovative though, I would like to see it finished.

Over dinner it hit me, just throw a U-joint and steering knuckle on the wheel side. That'll give me some clearance between the tire and the links as well. Now to draw it up, or maybe booty-fab it first.

Not even close. My driveshafts will run alongside the suspension links. There will be no axle per se, that is to say there will be nothing between the wheels where a differential would be, except maybe a tie-bar way up high if I decide to do it as a solid-axle setup.

The more I think about it, the more I see how it can be done. And that means it must be done. But it's gonna take a bunch of time and money, so don't look for it soon. It will happen, though. Too bad there isn't an aluminum-for-plasma exchange.... |

1:1 Walker rig was 2 yrs ago and he went back to solid axles 1/2 way through the season. I like your idea alot. Anyway here a Rock crawler thats more forklift then rock crawler. Sorry for the pic being big. But it may give you some ideas. I believe this one was chain driven. Sorry for this pic being small. It's hard finding pic's on this rig. This rig was built by Cameron Carlson. If you guys are like me and keep all your magazines. It is in Petersens 4Wheel & Offroad from December 2003 page 49. The write up was called Jungle Gyms. |

Very much like Jungle Gym, only each side will be independently driven. Thinking about leaving the diffs in the trannies open and adding brakes to the rear wheels to do front digs as well, but I may run out of channels. We'll see what happens when the build gets truly underway. Right now it's still in the mockup/drawing/beer swilling stage. |

The one I've got drawn up in CAD has 126 degrees of steering at each corner. Once I get the suspension details worked out I can start construction. Time and money permitting. | |

i think the car manufacturer renault or citroen made a concept offroad vehicle a few years back where each wheel was on a long arm and the drive shafts ran down the center of each arm and had 4wheel steer, it also had the abilty to raise or lower the height off the vehicle and compansate for side slopes, if you can get it to work there are loads of people out there wanting to see a rc hog out of halo

Oh yeah, and the tranny would have to have reversed outputs as well, since the front and rear wheels will spin in opposite directions with this design. It's custom tranny time!

I've got a half-azzed drawing, I'll put together something decent after work tomorrow and post it up.
