Axle wrap?

So yeah, a 4 linked tlt, stock chassis with a pede trans.

The rear axle has axle wrap, it compresses the shocks/springs, and points the pinion straight up almost...

Any ideas as to why this would happen?

Got any pics? How long is you top links compared to the bottom links. It sounds like your uppers are to long:?

BENDER 01-22-2006 09:41 PM

Can you post some pics of your set-up? It'll be alot easier if we could see your link set-up. Chances are you don't have enough seperation between the upper and lower links on the axle.

Lower your upper link mounting point on the chassis.

Best bet to making a simple 4-link to work is to try to double trianglate your links and keep the vertical seperation as equal as you can.

id mount the upper links at the same point as the lower links on the chassis. thats what i did and i have no axle wrap.heres a pic to show you what i mean.

oh and i have to agree with Bender. id also mount the uppers a little higher to get them further away from the lowers on the axle. hope this helps!;-)

Brian, aka XJFanatic.com 01-22-2006 10:01 PM

cant really go any lower with how they are right now, i may have to make some brackets to make the uppers converge on axle as opposed to the chassis. so i can use the same pivot on the axle right now it'd make the driveshaft hit a link.

bigflex 01-22-2006 10:06 PM

the links wouldnt hit the drive shafts if you reverse the triangulation of the upper links.

hwm3 01-22-2006 10:06 PM

You should stick to leaf springs. :flipoff:

Trike Kid 01-22-2006 10:07 PM

If you use the same pivot on the axle, the thing is just going to flop and do nothing but axle wrap. If you put them in the same place on the axle, you have a hinge instead of a suspension system.

actually just using a pen to trace the path, they would... ugh

Brian, aka XJFanatic.com 01-22-2006 10:22 PM

hmm i think i may have just figured out a way to do it, i'll have to find some material to make the mounts outta this weekend

bigflex 01-22-2006 10:25 PM

well you could put a slight bend in the one next to the drive shaft and shorten the other one to get the same length. just a thought.

Brian, aka XJFanatic.com 01-23-2006 06:15 AM

thought bout that, and think thats what i'm gonna do

Brian, aka XJFanatic.com 01-23-2006 06:17 AM

heres another idea, what if i make an over the servo style mount that will work both front and rear? than i can use the original mounting points i had and will have plenty of axle seperation.

Cole82 01-23-2006 06:24 AM

That's your best idea so far.

Brian, aka XJFanatic.com 01-23-2006 07:59 AM

now i just gotta figure out how and what off to make the mounts, since aluminum likes to crack when bent 90 degrees

skid 01-23-2006 10:07 AM

For the aluminum link mount, I used a old ruler. Had one that was about 24" x 1.25"? Made 4 mounts with plenty left over. Hasn't cracked on me yet when I bent it.

Brian, aka XJFanatic.com 01-23-2006 10:15 AM

you got any pics of how you have it set up? or attached to the axle?
