Dude a 7980 at 6 volts is pushing 500 oz. of torque! That's not exactly takin it easy on any servo horn I think it's over-kill. That's just my opinion. Plus it is bigger, it's gonna push your servo horn forward more.

But you're right Dicky, i may have just got lucky

No such thing

It needs at least 6v to feed it, otherwise it stalls. If it were a bit smaller and did not need to be massaged in I would have one in my rig too. but I will stick with my 7950 @ 7.4v and it's meager 486oz

Yes sir, i've got mine at 7.4 aswell. 486 is more than enough

DickyT, what did you have to massage for the 7980? Other than loosening the motor and sliding the mount all the way out mine screwed right on, didn't look like it would but it did. Went straight to 8.4 volts and I don't consider it overkill at all, the stock link bar didn't like it though.

If it pushes the horn foward any it's barely noticable, most of the extra size is thickness, width and to the back. If anything sticks out further it that big honkin Intijunk horn that hangs down and sticks out more than a 7980 with a Robi horn.

8.4 volts? That's more than 700 oz. of torque! Over-kill

Say what you want about Integy, but my "Intijunk" horn has took some big hits, earned me an undefeated record, and still keeps truckin

Being thicker the servo mount holes on the XR and the 7980 do not line up exactly on. The servo holes are a bit taller than the xr mounting holes.

So what did you do to make it better? I noticed that but by starting all the screws it sucked into place.

On the voltage IMO the 7.4 volt rating is 2s lipo, so it takes 8.4 on the BEC (or 2s lipo voltage) to get the full 611 or whatever it is, same for the 7950's.

Same as you did with the motor loosening and such, I started the screws albeit angled and worked them to straight by the time a few rows of threads were in. Then tightened them in an hourglass pattern that is what I call massaged as opposed to jammed, forced, modified, etc.

For me "massaged" is a little extra work. Having to straighten the screws and move the motor back qualifies the term in my pea brain. My apologies if I led to believe anything else was done. I would have probably mentioned that in Tydl's built thread if modification was needed.

My 7950 on the other hand "dropped in"

I keep my BECs all at 7.0 volts...so, my 7950 gets some decent torque...but I am not really sure on its torque vs voltage curve. My 7954s are also at 7.0 volts.

I have no way to measure it either. I go by the "it seems to be enough" method which has worked ok so far. If I could get 7980 power in 7950 size I would be all over that like smog in Zhengzhou

Thanks for all the info guys. I run my 7950 at 7.4 volts as well. I thought for a while about a 7980, but I like to keep my servo covered up with a Crawler Innovations servo guard. The 7980 is too wide and won't fit. At least it won't drop in. Maybe if you massaged it.

Looks like the Robotronics long arm is the way to go for me, believe it's 1" right?

Thanks

yup on the long hole and 7/8 I believe on the short. might be wrong. I can't find anywhere with hitec ones in stock though. Jp customs says he's expecting a shipment any day but it still hasn't arrived. Just a matter of waiting till it gets there I guess!

It was actually during the first course. I just cranked everything down and was gentile, dunno how I made it 2 more courses. Used a stock blue horn and it lasted longer the the integy.... It still didn't last thru the finals.
