Shock oil and shock spring help
 
I have purple springs (14x80x1.1 14 coil) on my Wheely King shocks, I think I have 15-20wt oil in the shocks. The suspension is a little soft. I have a very limited ability to change shock geometry. Would I see an advantage if I used 50wt shock oil? I am curious, it would take more pressure for the shock to compress with the heavier oil, but would it not also take more pressure for the shock to rebound?

What changes are you wanting to make to the shock?

Do you want it to cycle slower? If so, then stepping up oil weight or stepping down piston hole size/count will do that for you.

Do you simply want the shock to compress slower but rebound the same??

Maybe compress slower, and rebound a littler faster. I guess in the end, whatever gets me a more stiff suspension works. The rig is pretty heavy. I may try and fab some new shock mounts to allow for more variable geometry.

I have been going through something similar with my super. It is quite heavy and even thicker weight oils still arent doing the trick.

Maybe you can try an internal spring above the piston. That would give the slower compression and faster extension that you are looking for, however, this will limit the uptravel some (the distance of the fully compressed spring).

My wheel base is ~16". So Im going to work on my shock towers, and oil.

Sounds good. Try standing the shocks up a bit more...

Oil weight (AKA viscosity) alters the speed that the shock moves at. Temperature also affects this, lower temps usually means stiffer/slower.
Spring weight varies the ride height as well as the force needed to move the shock (too stiff a spring means the suspension WON'T move, the whole chassis does).
Variable jounce (compression) & rebound (extend) is ideal, but hard to do in this small size.

You may need to juggle multiple things to get what you want, but this also means it will likely change with temperature.

Every amaze you guys what you find when searching or needing RC stuff. All I had was I thought 15,20, and 30wt. oil. Figured Id run to the LHS tomorrow, and grab some 50wt, but there, laying on the desk is a bottle of 50wt"thumbsup" Switched oil, and just using hand compression noticed a small change. Rebound change a bit, but not enough to bother me. I only for it for fun!

BTW, heres the monster - got two shock mounts done - need to lower the chassis, cg is a bit high (for some reason the pics make it look higher than it really is.

Oh, incase someone asks later....you can't mix, say, 20wt & 30wt to get 50wt, you would end up with ~25wt. You end up with a wt (weight) somewhere in between the 2 you used."thumbsup"

Uh, wait a minute, I was told there would be no chemistry in this?!
Dilution factors were not suppossed to be part of the RC hobby.

As much as Id like to ask WTH you would post that, I know there are people out there that might actually ask................................sad!
