Default soldering???

I see that most are using brazing to put together a tube chassis. With it being the winter season and not many outdoors projects left I have considered building a tube chassis. Getting a torch and faux sounds a little pricier than I want, will soldering work or no?

The only solder I'd even consider using is Silver Solder, and it's about $1.50/ft.

If I'm right, that's about $10.75 for half an ounce.

Safty-Silv is 12.75 per ounce, Flux is $6 for a small tub.

Rockhound, you're still going to need to get a MAPP gas torch, silver solder, and paste flux if you want to solder up a tube frame. I got the torch, solder, and flux at Sears for $50. The torch-silver soldering process isn't vastly different from brazing. A soldering iron and standard solder might not produce joints that are strong enough for a tube frame crawler. Take a good look around on RokToy's website for all of the info that you will need to make a tube frame.

Thanks for the tips and the website. Now that we bought a house and are about to get married I dont have the cash to keep doing real full size offroad toys - so I have to go with the small ones (although they can cost just as much since I had a chopped up Cherokee that wheeled like no other for a total of $300). I am bored of not having stuff to tinker with and fix, and making a tube chassis should be just the project to get me in the shop and away from the woman .

Just so I have an idea how this works - when does the flux go on, before the brazing rod or after?

You should always listen to your fiance's grandfather. My wife's grandfather told me what women in his family always try to run things, and you have to put your foot down hard, early, and often.

He did append this statement muttering under his breath something to the effect of "it's the only way to keep the damn things out of your mouth..."

Rockhound, always remember these words that you said yourself:

"I am bored of not having stuff to tinker with and fix, and making a tube chassis should be just the project to get me in the shop and away from the woman."

This is the secret to a happy marraige! Even if it does mean a marraige between yourself and the shop...

Funny you mention the muttering and trying to keep your feet out of your mouth - that is basically how I was informed .

if you are going to use a torch to braze does anyone think it would just be easier to melt the pieces together and add add a little filler metal. ive found that this works good with just a little practice and seems a lot cheaper than brazing

the only thing you would have to change is MAPP to oxy/acc
