| brazing?
I have just spent an hour looking through a "brazing" search. I have learned a lot and become more confused - I think. I have seen the terms Silv 56, 1/16 rod, and flux. Is Silv 56 a rod???? I am researching and contimplating the idea of building a tuber using 3/16 brakeline. Is this correct: put the flux around (or in - which one) the joints of 2 "tubes", then hold the Silv 56 (if it is a rod) on the joint and torch using a MAPP?

Jason has been on me to do a write-up for the site...it's nearly complete. I'll get pics, etc and get it up this weekend. |

1. Brush the flux on. The flux is for cleaning the tubing you will be soldering together. 2. Heat the tubes evenly. Once the metal reaches the rite temperature, apply the solder to the joint. The heat from the metal will melt the solder and draw it into the joint. Don't melt the solder and apply it to the joint, it won't stick. Mapp gas will work but you don't need that much heat. Propane works well also. To much heat can melt the metal you are trying to solder. Another option is to use brazing rods. You can get brazing rods with solder already coated or mixed into the solder. As long as the tubes fit togehter well, and you use flux, you should'nt have to much problems. Read the write up. I'm sure it will have more details. I threw in my two cents in case you were getting anxious. |

Thank you, that gives me a much better idea what I am getting myself into - sounds much easier and cleaner, I was thinking I would do what you said not to do.

Actually the flux is not used for cleaning the tubes. You should clean them before applying the flux. The flux allows the braze rod to flow and helps pull impurities out of the molten joint. Jay |

I was going to take pics, etc for the write-up this past weekend but for some odd reason my back is killing me. I think it's my body thanking me for all the crap I did to it in the Army. :( Took a percocet last night, that helped. The wife has me busy tiling our daughter's bathroom tonight. When that's done I'll get pics and stuff. |

ROFL. I even picked up an ultra-cool brazing lamp today at Lowe's. One hand is designed to hold a pencil (brake tubing), the other arm has an alligator clip for a hand, which should come in handy while soldering. But he's a lazy cuss. Told ya I'm taking percocet. |

I use a mapp/oxygen set and bronze flux coated rods. The rods are REALLY cheap, like 15 bucks a pound and flow like butter! The only problem is those darn oxygen bottles they are so small they only last about 20 min. It makes you try to be real efficient. Make sure you fishmouth the tubes where they meet. Heavy |
